Hello everyone,

I am about to pull my hair out.

Yesterday I was all excited as I built my very own PC. I installed Windows 8.1

I hooked it up into my system today, as I was planning on using it for gaming and audio.

The problem is, my USB DAC won't output sound.

I have a Meitner MA-1. I downloaded the latest XMOS driver on their site. The PC recognizes the DAC, it shows up in sound options, but no sound comes out of the DAC, and into my system.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Nothing.

I tried restarting over and over again. Nothing.

I unplugged the DAC, and replugged it in. Nothing.

I plugged the USB DAC into my APPLE laptop, and it worked immediately.

At this point I have no idea what to do. I can use the video card to output sound via HDMI, but that defeats the purpose and benefits of USB audio doesn't it?

So frustrated right now.

Anyone have any ideas?

I would uninstall the USB driver and try reinstalling in Win7 compatibility mode.  Assuming that you have already configured the dac as default output.

I downloaded the proper driver. I DLed version 1.63. Although, it says Windows 8, and not 8.1. Also, when I DLed that driver, and install it, it installs the windows 32 bit driver. I have 8.1 64 bit. Would that matter?

Right click on the driver that you are trying to install and select compatibility section and than select win7.  You can try installing the driver in win8 compatibility mode since you mentioned that the drivers are listed as win8.

I have played my MA-1 in both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.  I have used the 1.63 driver and the earlier 1.29 (which requires compatibility mode).  One thing I've recommended to other MA-1 users: if you have a 3rd party PCiE USB card (SOtM, JCAT, PPA, etc) do not install the driver from that card, but instead from a mobo USB port.  Once installed, then move the USB over to your high end card.

Also, PM me if you want Meitner's latest driver, 2.20.  It may well be more compatible than 1.63 on your setup.

I am in and out all day today running errands with the family, so I'll be able to do some more work with it tonight or tomorrow morning.

Turns out his issue was the RAL dual conduit cable.  Brad has several versions, a few with ground only in the power leg.  That was the issue....once he took my recommendation and tried a simple Belkin printer cable it worked.

P.S  I'd still use the new driver; it is good and quite Win8 friendly.   And the MA-1 sings with the slightly warmer Paul Pang (PPA) line of USB cables (or the more $$ but still quite reasonable TotalDac D1 cable).

Yes, I was using the RAL with the MAC.

Why it didn't work with the PC, I'll never know. It works now with a simple belkin usb cord, and I'm happy.

I doubt it's a Windows problem. More like an electrical issue that electrical engineers are pretty darn good at figuring out. But if you want to eliminate Windows as the culprit one could install Bootcamp and Windows on the Mac, boot to Windows and see if the problem exists or not. If no then my suspicion of it being an electrical issue is confirmed, no?
