Toslink into DAC - noise problem
« on: 12 Jul 2014, 11:05 pm »
Hi folks
I've got a Burson DA-160 DAC and output from SB Touch via Toslink or Coaxial is not a problem. When I try run Toslink from my TV out or the Cable box out, there's just noise. Anyone aware of how TVs and Cable boxes may create output that is incompatible with DACs or this Burson DAC?
Thanks!

srb

The typical stereo DAC cannot decode a Dolby Digital signal.  Many TVs have an audio submenu where you can change the default Dolby sound output to "PCM", "LPCM", "2 channel" or "stereo" digital audio (but unfortunately some TVs do not have the ability to change the output).  It seems the majority of cable boxes do have this option.

Oh yeah...things become so obvious when someone provides the answer. 5 channel to 2 channel is exactly the problem. TV (Sony) has no way to change the output. Cable box is limited in that you can only do one at a time (HDMI or PCM). I may switch to component so I can run PCM (to the TV and the DAC) all the time. For now, I'll need to switch btwn outputs when wanted...
