It's nice to see a ral equipment review rather than what most have become, that is information-less ramblings.

"In fact, that future is here now as Bryston will be updating the SP3 to use the MDS HSR82, which will provide support for 4K video (3840 x 2160). Details on exact specs, pricing, and upgrades will be announced by Bryston."

James, at this time, do you have any expected time frame for the HDMI upgrade (this fall, winter, middle of 2015, etc), and will it be a field upgrade or a ship-and-return upgrade?

Current production has the new HDMI board and we are looking at how best to offer an upgrade.  It really is not necessary unless you have 4K sources. So far I can not seem to find much?

Hi James,

With the developments on this new HDMI 4K board, what else will be changed and offered as an upgrade?

I will add my wish list of improvements for the SP3:

1) 1 RCA coaxial (SPDIF) output
2) Additional USB input
3) Not sure the present Toslink output is capable of 24b/192k for digital signals - great addition if possible
4) DACs will be remain the same or will they be updated as well?
5) HDMI switching from inputs, sometimes you need to restart the source for SP3 to sync properly
6) Will the display have more capabilities for messages/customization features?
7) Apple/Android compatibility
8) Async USB module

And I can't wait to review another favorable report about the SP3 :D :D....

Ciao, Luigi :green:

Hi

At this point just the HDMI board and maybe some software changes to add a few more features.

As I have said many times the SP3 is really not designed to have all these features and is not for those folks that want the swiss army knife features above all else.  The SP3 is designed with sound quality first and foremost and some features we will just not be able to accommodate.

The reviewer said to me privately - and I thought it was a great line - Most processors are Computers first whereas the SP3 is a Audio 7.1 Preamp first  :thumb:

Ah! And THAT is what we LOVE about it!

I've gone back and forth between a lesser processor and a separate 2-ch preamp with HT pass through OR between getting an SP3. My delay is entirely budget constraint at the moment, but I would rather get the SP3 and get the best of both in one package!

What do you listen to most, 2 channel audio, MCH audio or movie soundtrack surround?

That ends up being a loaded question for me.

Most often, we watch television via Tivo. So sound is usually Dolby Digital, but nothing amazing.

I care most about 2-ch music. That's when I sit down, close my eyes, and allow myself to just listen. I prefer little light and zero other ambient sounds. That's when little differences make an impact (to me).

I care second-most about movies. I LOVE a good movie with an engaging sound track/sound effects. Most are pretty good these days. For example, Tron: Legacy. While it may not be the pinnacle of acting or story telling (I liked it, but I've read several posts where people weren't big fans of it), but it is SOOO much fun to watch on a good sound system.

I never listen to multi-channel music. I don't have the source material and my surround speakers are just intended for movies.

As an example, I'm toying with an amplifier purchase. I really want 7 channels total. My surround is just 5 + sub, but the extra 2 channels power my patio speakers. Those are just ambient music so I'm not picky about the amp. Also, space is at a premium for me, so component depth and height can matter. Anyway, my debate is between a 5ch amp + a 2 ch amp (9b-sst2 + 4b-sst2) or a 5ch + a 3 ch (9b-sst2 w/4 channels + 6b-sst2). Getting to turn on just the 2ch amp for music is a plus (heat), and the height + heat output of the 4b+9b may be less than the 6b+9b. However, I leave my center channel with less power and not identically matched to my L/R.

As for the SP3, there's other things I admire. For example, it will take any digital audio source and supply an analog 2-ch downmix to a set of outputs I can run to my headphone amp, and I think to Zone 2 as well. Less cables required and easier operation (for me at least).

Decisions, decisions. :)

Based in your response I would max out on a 2 channel pre amp and 2 channel amp and fill in the rest of the channels based in your budget.

And one of the pluses to that path is that I can upgrade just 2ch amp and 2ch preamp OR I can upgrade just the processor (should it become necessary), and not impact the other half of the equation.
