passive sub using prepro EAD xovers??
« on: 28 Aug 2004, 11:34 pm »
Hi.  I am looking to either build or buy a sub for my HT system.  I am using an EAD TM 8000.  What i want to know, is if i use a passive sub, do i run the IC's to the offboard amp, then speaker wire to the amp, then basically its the EAD crossovers i use from the pre pro??  Do i still need crossovers in the sub?  Any info would be great.

PS   Any ideas on either a good passive sub for around $600, or material and sub components to build one for about the same.  Thanks all.

If you use the x-over in the EAD, you won't need a crossover in the sub.

I do it that exact way:

Denon 3805 -> Crown K2 -> VMPS Larger subs

You can get a used VMPS Larger for less than $600 used.

Pharsyd, welcome to the Circles!

From what you describe, I would say yes, you take the sub out from the EAD, connect it to the amp for the passive sub, and then the sub from that amp - the EAD should then feed the sub amp, just sub signal.

As for building your own passive sub, I have had great success with buying drivers, and building boxes.  In Ontario there are some places to hunt (in Toronto there is Audio Hardware Inc, The Speaker Shop).  I had pleasing results with buying a 300w Class D amp, and then building 2 subs.  One is a ported 12 (4 cubic feet, tuned to 23Hz for movies), the other a sealed 12 (1.5 cubic feet, for music).  I just swap the speaker cables to change the bass monster, for whatever genre I am looking for.

Adire is great to deal with.

This driver of theirs http://www.diycable.com/main/product_info.php?products_id=484 is incredible.

Buld it a good enclosure, and prepare to be amazed.
