So, "out of the blue", a co-worker brings me an HH Scott 325r receiver and a box of what looks to be vintage drivers.
The receiver face looks like it just came out of the original box, it's awesome. The back has a few cobwebs.
I'm curious to know the thoughts of anybody with experience with the 325r.

Also, he gave me some drivers. Curiously, they're still wired together, which appear to have been in a three-way enclosure.
The drivers are 3", 4", and 12" (one each per side). There are no markings as to brand or country of origin. The 12" also has no surround, which I'm not familiar with ever having seen (but I'm not a 'vintage' guy).

The button on the receiver labeled "subsonic", I find most curious.

I plugged it in, and the tuner light comes on. That's as far as I've gotten.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!   :thumb:

...and...just cause I know y'all like to see neat old vintage things that are still shiny, here's the Scott 325r:

Free is good. Subsonic is a low filter to take away the wow'ing of the woofer when playing records.
My guess without a web search is early 80's.
Fire it up and report back!

Consult Abby. Maybe she can come up with some cabinets for those speakers. Speaking of the young one, how's the mtm now that they are broken in?

Hi Bob in St-Louis city.
Yes, how's Abbie doing with her MTM creation?

The speakers look like they came out of a big television/radio/record player console that was made in the late sixties or early seventies. Those kinds of speakers usually didn't have a surround, as they were very efficient and voiced for the T.V. to sound good.

The reciever looks like a late seventies model to me, and totally unrelated to the speakers. Have fun with it!

The woofer is most likely made by Oxford (code 465), in the first week of Feb. in 1957 or 1967.  Check out EIA speaker codes.
There is a smaller chance that it was made by Western Electric (code 336)
The receiver has those spring loaded speaker connectors that were popular in the late 70's

Hey Bobber,

Since the Scott receiver has phono, give Abby your AR table and let her spin records.   :thumb:

Thank you all for the info!  :thumb:

Paul, I'll fire it up for sure. Thanks man!
I would have never guess that had anything to do with phono performance. That's pretty cool.
When I saw that, I flipped it around and looked for a "sub-out" jack.

Don, you're a funny fellow. ha ha ha
Abbie is LOVING the speakers. In fact, a buddy of mine wants me to build him a pair because they turned out so good.
Abbie told me she's going to help.  8)

Mark, That's not a bad idea with the vinyl. I'll have to do some soul searching to see if I'm ready to give up my precious AR-XA.

Jerry, She's already got one of my old Sony receivers, she can't have ALL my cool toys. ;)

QuietEarth, thanks man. That almost tells me that it won't sound good for music since they're a three-way console 'pull' for TV.????

Scott, thanks for the heads-up. I'll search for that.

Thanks all for the good info. I can't wait to hear these.

I wouldn't write them off yet. A lot of console TVs where part of a system, which included some combination of a tuner, turntable, and other music "driven" inputs.

If you can nail down what the drivers are, there are plenty of cabinet builder math applications that will tell you what kind of volume, bracing, porting, etc. you'll need.

And with the Abbie Audio Werks production facility currently at idle...

:rotflmao: Like I said earlier, we might have another order for the "Tri-Trix" three way here soon.
As time allows, I'll try to find what they came out of with the goal of rebuilding the enclosure. Good point, I shouldn't "knock them" before I try them.
Thanks Mike!

Bob, if those drivers were a pull from a console then they are likely to work in OB (although the mid is sealed), you're somewhat familiar with OB speaker systems aren't you?

With Alnico magnets I wouldn't give up on them before hearing them.

Best,
Ed

Ed, that's some good information. Thank you.
The thought of OB occurred to me, but I wasn't sure. I also wondered if that was Alnico. If so, then that's the first time I've ever touched one! I was amazed at how light these drivers are.
Although I'm not sure I've got room for more large OB's in the house.  :duh:
Maybe in the garage. hmmm.....

I see why it was free.

The receiver has to be turned up to "8" before any volume comes out. I tried on a couple different pairs of speakers, and two different source inputs.
I popped the hood and checked the four fuses, and happened to see this little fellow. I'm thinking he's seen better days. My (very) novice electronics diagnostics skills think this is the cause.

Bob, I have the same receiver in my photo darkroom/laundry room.  Works fine, or it did when I last used the enlarger  :duh: , but you are welcome to it if you want.

Tom, I'm secure enough in my masculinity that I'm willing to just..."put it right out there".

Bob, Funny you ask. I fired the smoker up at 5:00am this morning.
Here's my culinary "to do list" today:

- On right now are 18 pounds worth of pork "picnics" (pork butt plus part of the leg). Next weekend is a retirement party for my Mother in law at my house.
- For lunch today, I'm going to make some all beef, bacon wrapped, spiral cut, hot dogs on buns with Jalapeno cheddar cheese and spicy mustard.
- Later, I'll do two "fatties" (pork chubs) which are great for breakfasts later in the week.
- I've also got some garden zucchini that I'll slice up, grill, and top with a pesto and mozzarella cheese for an early afternoon snack.
- I'm thinking I may shave some of the bark off the pork and use that to make some stuffed bell peppers with sauteed onions and mozzarella cheese for a mid-afternoon snack.
- I've also got a few pounds of chicken I'll smoke. This will get cut up and panini-pressed into tortillas with pepperoncini peppers. These will be my lunches for the week.

If you'd like, I'll even take pictures.
By the way, what are you having today?

Bob
