my "Rx9HE stylus" w/ music hall MMF-2.2 TT review
« on: 2 Jul 2014, 07:50 pm »
hi y'all. upon the recommendations of a couple of folks in this forum, i upgraded the stylus on the music hall tracker cartridge (that came with my music hall MMF-2.2 TT.) i do notice a positive difference in sound quality with the new stylus. the first thing i noticed was that the bass is more defined. the bass has more of an edge to it and more layers to it also. i then noticed the mid range and treble are more clear sounding. also, the bump in the upper mid range is now gone with this stylus. i'm glad i got this stylus upgrade! (by the way i'm using a pre amp and speakers that are extremely revealing. the pre amp being the emotiva XSP-1 gen 2 and the speakers being selah audio verita monitors with paper coned mid woofers.)

With some time to "loosen up", it will get even better.

now that i've had time to listen further, i don't think the treble and midrange is up to par with the original stylus/cartridge. i will be returning this stylus. (at first listening i thought, where is the treble, but thought it would get better. but it didn't.) happy listening anyway, john.

Hi,
It's a little unusual to read a positive report and an hour and a half later it seems no good.  A new stylus usually requires at least 5 hrs or so playing time to break-in.  This is a mechanical thing and it could take 7 or 8 full albums.

Did you ever check the set-up parameters on your cart which came with the table?  Alignment and VTF (at the very least) should be checked.  You also might need a small height adjustment on your arm (up?).  If you're going to have a successful long term experience with records, this sort of thing is a requirement.  Are your records clean?  Another essential ingredient.

Unfortunately, unless the stylus is defective, you probably won't be able to return it without a dispute, and rightfully so.  I think it might be okay and you haven't given it a chance?  If you look at it with a magnifying glass, does it look okay?  Maybe we can help you figure it out.
