ripper suggestions

I'm new to ripping and am asking for suggestions. Here's what I posted on Cheap and Cheerful forum:
"Today I received my Sansa Clip+ and Thinksound ms01in-ear monitors. In the Sansa box is a card urging me to load Rhapsody:
"Install the Rhapsody software on your PC and create an account. Creating an account is the only way to activate all of the features on your new Sansa Clip+MP3 Player." Then I'm encouraged to try Rhapsody free for 30 days.

I want to rip my CD's to flac files because down the road I will receive my tricked out Geek Pulse and I also have an OPPO BP105, so I want hi-rez files and when I buy from places like HD music, I'll buy flac. So, do I pass on loading Rhapsody? And, what's the best program to rip to flac?"

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) has worked extremely well for me with access to databases for album art and lyrics.

You can save the CD data as FLAC files and keep the metadata in the files.

Pretty easy to setup and install on a PC using Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Thanks Hal, I've seen references to EAC. I assume metadata is the album art and lyrics. I've got to educate myself on this ripping, storing, streaming, cloud world, as a bit of a late adopter. (not a completle dinosaur - I have a Sonos 5

)

IIRC, dbPoweramp website/forums also ranks which external CD drive are the best for doing. I may still have some in my closet if you're interested.

I have used EAC in the past, and while it does a good job it isn't the easiest thing in the world to use.

dbPoweramp is really easy to use, and it does just as good, if not better of a job, so I would go with that, even though it is not free, its pretty cheap.

In my limited experience, laptop drives are much slower and have more errors that need correcting. A 5.25" drive in an external USB case lead me to a better experience overall. I used EAC, but the above info is also stated on the EAC and dbPoweramp sites. It's been a few years since I looked, but I'm guessing the info is still there.

In addition, they say some drives are better than others. I have a few and can corroborate that statement.

If you have a lot of music to rip I would strongly suggest dBpoweramp. It not only is easy to use put also pretty quick at getting an accurate rip done.

A new, simple to use ripper that many people may not be aware of, is Easy Audio Copy, from Andre Wiethoff, the developer of EAC. Like dbpoweramp, it's a paid product, not free. Like both EAC and dbpoweramp, it uses AccurateRip when it can, to assure the best rips possible. In a lot of ways it's far more like dbpoweramp than EAC. For instance, it will rip a CD first in burst mode, check the AccurateRip database for a match and then fall back to secure mode if a match isn't found.

For the Sansa Clip+ you may want to load Rockbox instead of using the standard SanDisk firmware. I can't say enough good things about Rockbox software.

For the linux users out there, I would toss in Python Audio Tools as they also use the exact audio copy checksum approach. Ping me if you need scripts to automate this process.
