I sent a message on A'gon indicating I was looking for a BDA-2 with a silver faceplate. Here is the response I received:

"Hello, I sold this one last night locally. I can order another one from bryston for you at $1,730 with full warranty. Thnks Nathan"

I hope you guys are getting a discount from Bryston for your sleuthing efforts. I wish I knew about this guy before spending $2395 on a BDA-2.

Yes we know this Nathan and he uses about 10 different company names on the internet - he is not an authorized dealer and anything sold through him does not have a warranty.

If they don't it is at their peril. If a manufacture allows their product to be devalued by rogue dealers then ultimately the product will not be supported by the quality dealers or the customer - eventually the company will cease to exist - it has happened many times in this business.

His profile says he is an individual. His ad does not indicate he is an authorized dealer. Unless someone complains to Audiogon, I don't think they have any idea of what is going on.

James, that's the best way to deal with these people. I've heard stories that some of them once they get a deposit will turn around and tell the buyer that they can't get the product, resist giving a refund (at least with some of the website bogus dealers) and try to entice someone to order something else. Unfortunately it is the internet and anyone can say anything or pretend to be something they are not. When I buy used gear on Audiogon (and I have over the course of time bought two Bryston amps and still have one of them, and had a BDA-1 at one point that I bought that was three weeks old as well as bought another amp from an Audio Circle member too), I try to make sure I am really dealing with an individual vs. one of these people hiding behind a profile.

Agreed - we tried to buy a CD Player 2 years ago through this dealer and after 8 weeks no player - finally got our money back after a long waiting period.

Also my guess is he does not actually have the unit he advertises - strange how when you inquire he "just sold it"

From the serial # they can determine who they sold it to. If Bryston only sells to authorized dealers, then one of the dealers is selling to Nathan. That dealer will then become an ex-dealer cutting off Nathan's source.

Unfortunately with the demise/decline (where even those in business may only carry limited stuff) of local Brick and Mortar stores one loses the ability to demo (which is important). Also with that demise, there tends to be a loss in many instances of who one is dealing with. For those manufacturers which still have a dealer network, the only means of weeding out dealers who don't live up to their agreements is to police websites like Audiogon themselves. Otherwise, it's not something that will make legit dealers happy, losing sales to potential customers.

OK, so the core of the problem is not that someone is selling an item that they obtained from an authorized dealer, but that the authorized dealer is thereby effectively not honouring the territorial agreement? (That didn't quite come out right, but you know what I mean - ?)

That's it and also that there are people selling items who claim to be authorized dealers who are not. It is not limited to the internet. Where I use to live there was a store about 30 miles away that was notorious (at least at one point) of telling customers they were authorized dealers for items they were not, taking a deposit, having a policy specified in the fine print about no refunds, and then trying to compel the purchaser/customer (vs. the only recourse to file a complaint with State Government authorities which may result in a timely resolution) to buy something else that the dealer is an authorized dealer for.

A seller can end a listing, in which case it is Expired. But if a listing is Suspended, it was suspended by Audiogon, most likely from a member complaint.

It is also possible that Audiogon noticed that the seller was advertising more than one item in the ad via instructions to call him about other equipment. Maybe they thought they were not getting paid. That would get their attention.
