Authorized Dealer Claim On AudiogoN. Is it correct?
« on: 22 Jun 2014, 10:08 pm »
There is someone on AudiogoN claiming to be an authorized dealer in Cleveland, OH and offering 29% off on Bryston products.  This doesn't seem quite right to me since the Bryston web site doesn't list any dealer near Cleveland.  Does anyone have more information on whether this is legit or a scam?  Here is the link: http://app.audiogon.com/listings/solid-state-bryston-bryston-products-best-bang-for-the-bucks-2014-06-22-amplifiers-44101-cleveland-oh

Unless I missed it, I did not see where the seller was claiming to be an authorized dealer.  The ad seems to indicate the item is new and the seller has access to other stuff

Scroll down to questions for the seller:

Q: Are you an authorized Bryston dealer so the products you sell will be covered under Bryston's warranty?

A: Yes, auth. Dealer with warranty. 29% off on any bryston I also carry many other lines.

Same here - all I see is "No questions have been asked about this item."  I was not logged in so I did and it did not show anything except no questions have been asked

Could it be that I see it because I am logged in?  I asked my question and received my response via AudiogoN's "Ask the seller a public question".

I logged in and do not see any questions displayed either - "No questions have been asked about this item." Maybe only the one who asked the question sees it displayed?

What is the name of this dealer?
Even if you are running a small business from home, you should have a name for your business.

There is no business name which is more than a little suspicious.  The user name on AudiogoN is, "onathan" and A'gon reports 3 sales in the last 12 months and 100% satisfaction.  For a Bryston-authorized dealer offering discounts of 29% that is a ridiculously low number of sales.

When was the last time that you have seen any Bryston dealer offer any discount anywhere in internet? excluding the used and refurbished.

Before I purchased my BDP-1 in June, 2011 I inquired if Audio Advisor was an authorized Internet dealer.
James Tanner replied: " Yes, they are our only authorized Internet dealer".
I've little doubt Mr. Tanner will comment on this discussion shortly.

Thank you, James.  No matter whose products they are selling, I like to call out individuals/businesses claiming to be authorized dealers when that isn't the case.

AFAIK when an Audiogon seller receives a question, when they respond they determine whether the question & answer is published privately or publicly.

I had inquired on some mini T's from the same seller and definitely was a nice discount(IF LEGIT).
Could be some collaborating goin on as I have had a few dealers where a certain product was 4000 and the other dealer would sell for 3300,even though they were in the same province.
It is funny though,if you look to buy a vehicle there are a lot of dealers in the same city selling chevs ect.
If one legit dealer can give a nice discount and the other doesn't I would definitely purchase from the lower one.
It just shows me how much some of these dealers are in for the coin.
I use to buy lots of gear from them over the years and I made the mistake of mentioning the above that I could get the said product at a better discount.
They didn't like that at all, so they cried and snivelled to the manufacturer,so the the manufacturer gave the discount dealer a bit of whatever.
Anyway my main dealer gave me the discount even though they weren't happy about it.
I figure if I can get a  nice discount from Vancouver or Calgary, why would I support the dealer in a city closer to me.
That a savings of 700.00.
Enough of my rant,I don't mind support local but not when There is a huge savings from another one five hours away.
There seems to be lots of flexibility when it comes to purchasing gear,I'd shop around to check pricing as you could save quite a bit.
The said dealer on Agon,I have no idea if he is legit or perhaps he has an in with a dealer that his sales are slow.
At 30%,I'm sure he's still making a profit especially if he turns over lots of product.
All the little things add up and where you only sell one thing at top price you probably are fasting for awhile :nono:..

Hi Folks,

I will check further but we were notified last week that one of our dealers (High Fidelity House - 4 stores)  in the north midwest was shutting down so it may be a piece from that dealer - will check further to confirm.

Sadly folks due to a lack of support for local brick and mortar dealers the audio landscape as we know it appears to be disappearing.  My fear is this race to the bottom price wise will change the way high end audio is distributed - I hope we come out the other side but the days of visiting your local dealer and auditioning gear seems to be disappearing.

That's so true and the ones that are left generally carry limited demo equipment (and since the demo is everything) it's getting harder to support them.  You see more and more home based retailers which avoids much of the expenses associated with a retail establishment.  I have made rare visits to brick and mortar stores over the last decade (and probably every one of those except one was to help someone else find something and the one time I went was more of a social visit to say hello to the owner I had not seen in a few years as the couple of times I was there he was not).

Zip Code 44101 is the main post office in downtown Cleveland. The only downtown shop that I can think of is Audio Craft and they have been there for over 50 years.

Audio Craft was apparently sold about 4 months ago per this: http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20140225/FREE/140229877/audio-craft-inc-sold-to-ivideo-technologies-of-cleveland
