LGK - Ammo Can Cabinets!
« on: 22 May 2014, 03:46 pm »
When I spotted these surplus ammo cans I knew they were waiting to become a speaker.  I contacted Danny looking for a suitable driver and he had just released the Little Giant Killers.  Perfect!  I needed a small full range driver for these and the LGK sounded like they would work well.

I drilled out the cabinet while waiting for the LGK's and even though I knew the dimensions, I still chuckled when I opened the box and took out the diminutive LGK.

I built the simplest network ever, installed the tube connectors, and wired it all up. I high passed them at 80Hz and utilized a GR 12" servo sub for the low end.

The size turned out to be irrelevant.

Holy crap.  Just holy crap.  After a bit of break in, I threw a bunch of music at these and wow the quality blew me away.  So incredibly smooth and relaxing to listen to.  I like these over the x-statik's for music.  I did not expect that!

I'm going to install spikes in the front and short bumpers in the back so I can do away with the "good husband" and "good wife" books :)  I'll also be lining the cans with NoRez.  They are already water tight with a thick gasket on the lid.  Bonus.

I'm thinking I need to sell these built and ready to play.  No, I must.  Too cool not to.

Danny, you have a great little driver on your hands.  I can't wait to see what you and the rest of the community come up with for them.

The Skiing Ninja strikes again!

Cool stuff Sean.   :thumb:

I am assuming that these are sealed, not ported?

What did you use to drill the hole in the front?

Sean, what size are those ammo can? I have several like that but I am pretty sure mine are smaller than the ones you are using.  They look great.

They are ported.

The port and driver holes were cut with a standard hole saw.  Worked great.

These are larger than typical from what I have seen.  They are 23"H x 5.5"W x 13"D

I was wondering about something smaller - I'll check with DR on appropriate volume...

History

The M252 system weighs 91 lb (41 kg) completely assembled and is composed of the M253 Cannon (35 lb, 16 kg), M177 Mount (27 lb, 12 kg), M3A1 Baseplate (29 lb, 13 kg), and the M64A1 Sight Unit (2.5 lb, 1.1 kg).[1] The mount consists of a base plate and a bipod, which is provided with screw type elevating and traversing mechanisms to elevate/traverse the mortar. The M64A1 sight unit (also used on the M224) is attached to the bipod mount. The M252 is a gravity-fired smoothbore system. Attached to the muzzle of the weapon is the Blast Attenuation Device (BAD), used to reduce the blast effects on the mortar crew. To increase cooling efficiency, the breech end is finned; though first-hand accounts attest that the level of cooling is negligible. The cannon also has a crew-removable breech plug and firing pin.

History[edit]
The M252 is an adaptation of the British 81mm L16A2 mortar developed in the 1950s. It entered service with the U.S. Army and replaced the previous 81 mm M29 mortar in 1987. It was adopted due to the extended range (from 4,500 meters to 5,650 meters) and enhanced lethality. In the U.S. it is produced by Watervliet Arsenal.

A much lighter version, the M252A1, was fielded for the first time in 2011. By reducing the number of parts and using lightweight materials, the total weight was reduced by 20.8 pounds. In the next several years, all U.S. Army M252s will be replaced by the M252A1.[2] As part of the same program, a lightweight version of the M224 mortar was developed.

According to the information stenciled on the side, these cans are for the M751 which is a practice PD (point detonating) fuze for the M252 81mm mortar so ...

LGK PD-81

or LGK-B!! (for BOOM!!)

Though these are awfully tall cans for fuzes. At least they are compared to the fuzes cans for 155mm and 8" Howitzers I used to use.

BOOM!! still works though

You could flip the box over and put the LGK in the bottom end of the box.

Is this in effort to get the driver closer to the edge of the enclosure or something else?
