Upgrade to Oppo 105??
« on: 19 May 2014, 04:11 am »
I currently own an Oppo 93, but have been contemplating moving up to the 105 (or possibly the 105D).  I'm mainly interested in improving my audio for both music and movies (as well as SACD, BR audio, etc.).  I think I would like to use the music server feature of the 105 as well.

Anyone used both?  Worth the money, especially for audio?

First post here, so thanks for any replies.

I think the big reasons to upgrade are:

* Stereo USB DAC for PC audio
* 105D will play native DSD through USB DAC (great for those PS3 ripped SACDs and other DSD files)
* 105D Darbee video processing

If you are just asking about audio optical disc playback improvement between the 93 and 105 then the delta is more subjective.

The 103 also lets one play music files via an attached hard drive, including DSD files.  I have an old 980, modded BDP-83, BDP-93 and also two (although have just unboxed one as I have not put back the main system after a move) BDP 103Ds.  I'm in process of putting music files on hard drives over the next week or so.  I've also heard the 105 and think as just a CD/SACD player if one wants an all-in-one player it is a good move.  I don't need a DAC for the main system (have a Meitner) so I don't need a 105.  I'll likely try multi-channel DSD files in the main system via the 103.  If you're going to the 105D, besides the video processing, and using its USB input for hi-rez and DSD you're going to need a server/computer anyway.

Phil,

How does the sound of your modded 83 compare to the newer models?

Phil,

How does the sound of your modded 83 compare to the newer models?

Have not had tons of time since the move to listen to stuff but it is clearly better as far as a player.  I've had a bunch of players in the old main system (in process of putting it back together now after the move) including a Marantz DV9600 (now in a guest room), modded 83, 93 for a bit and clearing the solid state modded 83 is better.  Long before the DV9600 I had a tube output stage modded XA-777ES and other borrowed players in the system like a Marantz 8260, XA-9000ES, etc.  I have one 103D in a spare system (basically my day time HT) on a 55 inch LED.  I have not listened to it tons for music but from I can tell it is better than a stock 93 but not as good as the modded 83.  I've moved to file playback via a music servic and DAC for a bit (putting back the main system now with the Meitner) for a bit and before that I had an HDMI audio de-embedder (still have them and upgraded power supplies) and a DAC (a Bryston BDA-1 and an old Micromega before that) and actually preferred the SACD playback converted to 24/88.2 in the modded 83 and played back to the DAC vs. analog SACD via the player to the preamp.  That's what more or less moved me in the direction to get away from disc playback as basically a $500 player with a $50 de-embedder (and the 83 did not need a handshake) and an (under $200) upgraded power supply was better than a $2k player. In certain ways the highs from the analog playback were a hair better but overall the imaging and everything else was better using the de-embedder.  I then realized the great value of a DAC doing move than CD quality (my old Micromega could only do 48k) and I moved into file playback.

Good to know that the mods stand up well to the newer unmodded models, as a solid state Modwright 83 owner. Many thanks.
