My BDP-1 could not detect USB drive
« on: 14 May 2014, 08:10 am »
Dear fellow users of BDP-1,

I have been using BDP-1 for a few years.  In the past, it had not had problem detecting any of the many different USB (thumb) drives I fed it.

I recently bought this item: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FE2N1WS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I loaded it with about music and inserted it into the BDP-1 (I tried the USB slots in front, as well as at the back).  For the first time, it failed to detect the drive.  I shut the BDP-1 down and restarted it - quite a few times - to no avail.  I checked the formatting of this drive and it says 'FAT32' - no different from other USB drives I have successfully used with BDP-1.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?  Can anyone suggest a solution?

Thank you all

Have you used any other "USB 3" (according to the add) designated drives w/ your BDP-1 ? I did'nt read the whole description of this thumb but that jumped out at me.

I've used some Seagate "USB 2 / 3" portable drives with my Auraliti PK100 without any hiccups, but I'm not sure how backwards compatibility works with a thumbdrive . Compare the "plug in" end of this thumb with any of your "USB 2" plugin ends

Hi Steve,

Have you tried different ports on the BDP-1? As a troubleshooting step, try connecting the thumbdrive to the BDP through a powered USB hub and see what happens as well.

Hey Gary,

It was'nt me asking the question. I honestly think his player is not "recognizing" what's plugged in because
the contacts on the USB 3 thumbdrive are not lining up w/ USB 2 input ports on the BDP-1.

I would try getting a USB 3 to USB 2 adaptor & then see if the player "knows what the heck" was plugged
into it.

Thank you for the replies so far.

I have used other USB 3 drives (both thumb drives and portable hard-disks) without any problem, so I doubt it's an issue with USB 3 vs USB 2.  I also doubt it's to do with the BDP-1 not being able to power the drive as USB thumb drives are an easy load.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Yeah I have had that same problem. I plugged it into computer USB slot and the computer couldn't detect it either. So I threw it in the garbage and took note which thumb drive not to buy. I don't think the drive was infected with a virus, but earlier ones I've used I think got some kind a virus off my computer. Have since done virus scans so I think my computer is clean at the moment.

It's a pain not knowing what I had on that drive, but I pretty much am doubling up on the good songs on another drive. :|

USB 3.0 devices have the same connector as there USB 2.0 equivalents, but also have an additional five pins used for the USB 3.0 spec, making USB 3.0 devices pin compatible with USB 2.0 hosts.  Infact you can use USB 2.0 cables with USB 3.0 devices.

Although I have yet to take a look at this devices specs; I suspect the culprit to be one of power usage, chipset compatibility(very rare in the 15 years I've used linux I have only encountered it once) or like James mentioned its not in the the database.

Cheers

Hi James,

I mainly use Mpad as my remote control.  I did go to "settings" in Mpad and hit "update database".  I also turned the BDP-1 off and on - which I assumed would automatically trigger an update of the database.  But after the update, using the navigation button on the face-plate confirmed that the drive was not detected.  Any ideas?

Using this same USB drive on my PC is fine - that's why I managed to copy all those music files in there.

Gee I am sorry I do not - it seems to work with other manufacturers thumb-drives - I will see if I can find one or send me a link and I will pick one up.

Also try Update on the BDP Settings Home page just in case MPad is the culprit.

Well, not to "nitpick" here, but.. , "also have an additional five pins" (while making it pin compatible w/USB 2)
is really only "physically" the "same" connector "externally". (Sorry, I'm only trying to save face here as I hate
giving out "Insufficiently Informed" advice. Which I seem to have , once again. )

I use the 64 gig versions of those and they work fine on my BDP-2

Much discussion about what is likely simply a defective thumb drive.

I had this problem with a PNY 128 gig USB 3.

It worked fine on my computer, but the BDP-2 didn't see it, no matter what i did.

So then i ran the disk utility on the bdp-2. It showed the PNY, but the PNY actually had 4 partitions.

I then ran the erase from the disk utility. It wiped the drive and it created just 1 partition.

After that the BDP-2 could see it, and  I could also move files to it from my computer.

I found the disk utility worked better on Internet explorer, as opposed to Firefox.

The optimal web browser for loony loon firmware are Safari and Chrome.  Manic Moose should address this and be compatible with Internet Explorer and Firefox as well.
