Treble extension, highs/ test tracks ?
« on: 12 May 2014, 12:37 pm »
So I am testing out some earphones. People say the highs are rolled off.
Please recommend what your test tracks are for listening to treble/highs.
Cymbals , high hat , etc...
Testing for shimmering airy highs.
Please include the band, album , and song track.
Thank you!!!
Todd

Mickey Hart, YAMANTAKA, 03 Towards The Bending of The Light
Mickey Hart, YAMANTAKA, 05  Field of Souls
Kodo, Mondo Head, 09 Echo Bells
Kodo, Mondo Head, 10 Kashira
Mino Cinelu, Mino Cinelu, 08 Will of The Wisp
Mino Cinelu, Mino Cinelu, 11 Why Not

These tracks will test the HIGHs and the lows, enjoy the work-out.
In a full range system these tracks do not appear to weighted towards one end of the spectrum or the other. The whole instrument should be present not just fundamental but also the entire spectrum of overtones. This also holds for the entire aforementioned Dave Grusin, Discovered Again album not just the third track, Sun Song.

I have the Yamantaka from the sorry late Celestial Harmonies label.
There is some samples here:

I listen this CD just once, it induce a unsual effect.

Thank you gentleman! I'll check these out. It's funny , I use Micky Hart's Planet Drum for bass slam testing.thunderous drumming tracks.
Would soprano sax be considered highs/ treble ?

Surely. As demonstrated by several musicians soprano has no bass.

One thing I like to test for when listening to highs, aside from the usual shimmering cymbals and triangle tones, is to play a CD that I know can be hard sounding at high volume. Dave Matthews "Crash" is a great album, with lots of energy and memorable songs, but if the volume is a bit too high it can sound glaring and hard and almost distorted (perhaps some overcompression on the production or pushing past the digital top).

It is interesting to hear how a speaker or earphone handles something less than pristene.
