Speaking of DQ-10s in the house........

I reluctantly sold my stacked pair/quad three years ago, all bought new in the 70s. Still have two DQ-1W subs and I am trying them out with Maggies. Both play, but one has a slight rattle in the driver. Who in the STL area would be best to look at the driver, or should I drop the whole cabinet off somewhere? Could it be a bad crossover?

Update:

When pushing the cone in on each sub, both seem smooth.

When pushing on one side of the bad cone the click appears. The noise is physical, as all electronics are unhooked, and is caused by the dust cap physically distorting, as if it's twisted.......... dent appears in the dust cap that goes away when the pressure on the cone is removed. I pulled the driver to see if anything was touching the cone. Nuttin'!

Sounds like that driver bottomed out hard once in it's lifetime, bending or breaking lose the voice coil former. That's just a guess though. Something you could try would be compressed air in the gap between voice coil and magnet, push it in and out and blow. It's possible there's something stuck in the gap. I'm not sure exactly what you're saying about the dent on the cap coming and going.

Bob, it probably would be cheaper to buy an advent woofer than to get this one reconed/rebuilt. Isn't it a nla woofer?

I'm open to spending money on a rebuild as it keeps the resale value largely intact. I don't know what woofer it is. Haven't looked into it yet.

I won't be listening for a few weeks, so would be happy to drop it off in STL for an estimate. Any shops that people would recommend? Any AC members do it as a hobby, or willing to trade repairs for vintage tubes?

I don't know if you guys realize it or not, but many companies actually continued producing woofers after 1975 ... with many advances as well.

Nah, they learned from that mistake

I'd be happy to take a look at the woofer and try to figure out what's going on. Whether it's rebuildalbe or not, impossible to say.

The dust cap deforms with a resounding "click" or "snap" when the cone is pushed in from one side. As soon as the pressure is removed the dust cap returns to its original shape.

If you need to rebuild the woofer, Regnar website says they will rebuild the woofer for $95. Simplyspeakers in Florida also shows that they can fix Dahlquist sub woofers. I've had good luck with Simplyspeakers when I needed Advent woofers fixed.

All of this is just in case you want to keep the boxes somewhat original. If you don't care, Ryan can surely recommend some modern woofers to fit in that big box.

My guess would be something came lose at the top of the pole piece. To access it the cone would have to come off, or maybe if lucky could just remove the dust cap and reach the problem.
