LGK's making good tunes
« on: 10 May 2014, 04:52 am »
A few pictures of my completed LGK's purring away on the desktop.

Thanks to Danny for the beautiful speaker design, and thanks to Ben at subassemble.com for the excellent CNC work on the MDF flat pack.

This was my first speaker build, and first attempt at veneering (Bird's Eye Maple).  I would be lying if I said that I didn't have a few hiccups, but ultimately I am happy with the finished product. Most importantly the speakers sound superb, powered by a small tripath.  Not quite on par with my reference 2-channel system but for the money, a very solid nearfield HiFi system; I am expecting an improvement when I integrate my long forgotten x-sub into the mix.

Congratulations. For your first build you did a great job. And a few hiccups are normal and just part of the learning process.

I like your choice of BEM veneer for this project. Know you'll enjoy these a lot!

X-sub added today, crossed at 100Hz.... and the Little Giant Killers are jamming!

Listening to some Stevie Wonder, and the LGK's are really flexing their muscles.   :weights:

Good Stuff.   :thumb:

Thanks BK_856er, your speakers were my inspiration they are beautiful.  I opened that beer and a few others!

Ok, a few observations of the LGK's.....

They really open up after some break-in time.  Soundstage and imaging has improved significantly in the past 24 hrs.  A subwoofer greatly improved my personal satisfaction with the speakers.  They integrate nicely with my 8" woofer and taking the low Hz off the small full range drivers allow them to do what they do best (Highs and Mids).  Earlier today I was very impressed with the way that the LGK and woofer were performing.  Fully blended spectrum of sound, giving much more presentation than their diminutive size would suggest.  For me the LGK's are sensitive to placement and toe-in.  I get the best image with slight toe-in focused just behind my head.

Overall very impressive sound system, and I expect to have these speakers get more use on a daily basis than any other speakers that I own.  Two thumbs up.

Continue to be amazed by these little gems.  For every additional day of break-in time that I put under their belts, they reward with increased depth of soundstange and dynamic presence.  Every day they get better and better.

Anyone looking for a nice set of desktop speakers give the LGK's a serious consideration, Danny did excellent work here.   :thumb:

Lookin' good !!  Congrats  :thumb:

I'm curious as to how these would work on their side ??  Sort of like a sound-bar thing.
I have a triple monitor setup and they would need to go under the monitors.

Several weeks on the LGK's, and all I can say it wow!  Not to sound like too much of a Danny Richie fanboy, but these speakers are seriously rocking my world.  I have all but forgotten about my Skiing Ninja modded Onix Ref1's, and Manley Shrimp and Mahi's sitting in the next room over.  The LGK's and X-Sub are blissful in a ultra-nearfield arrangement.

Listening to the following, enjoying a glass of Argentine Malbec; Superb!

As much as I hate to admit it, there is somthing special about "full range" drivers. You guys are really making me want a pair of those!

Very nice looking build. :thumb:

I know guys that have hand crafted amazing speakers for 20+ years. "Hiccups" are just part of the process. The challenge is figuring out how to hide them from the critical eye (usually the builder).  :)

SetterP, those speakers looks great. Perfect size with the Tripath amp. I am thinking about tubes and was wondering if a Miniwatt  amp would have enough power for the LGK 1.0? The amp is only 2.5W into 8 ohms (chinese rated) of EL84 power. Don't know if the original 4 tube or newer N3 (3 tube) is any different in circuitry. Danny should have the best idea, but others may also know.

If they are sitting right in front of you on your desk then they will be fine.

If you are trying to fill a room with them then you might want to look for more power.

I've enjoyed the Topping VX1, the integrated USB Dac is even pretty decent.  Cheap 2x25w worth of power, but it's making some great tunes.

2.5w won't reach outrageous levels, but would be nice for certain music at <1meter.

I am thinking about building some relatively cheap Class D mono amps at some point in the future for the LGK's, but at the moment I am pretty satisfied.

You can build some really great sounding amps for next to nothing using some of these new little chip amps. I did: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=124981.0
