DQ 10's in the house
« on: 10 May 2014, 12:39 am »
Just picked a pair of DQ 10's. Actually I used to own them many years ago. They have the JVC ribbon tweeter mod. I forgot how good these sound. They seem to really like tube power.  When I had them before I used my Musical Design D-140 and my big Nakamichi PA-7. The MD was very refined but just not enough power to get the last bit out of them. The Nak was a better match in terms of power but not as sweet. So now I have to think if I want to keep them or give somebody a good deal on a pair of nice speakers. Time will tell. I have to many projects right so I might have to let them go for lack of space. I will have to say that for right now they sure are a lot of fun.

Dahlquist and Vandersteen were designers who recognized that box cavities color the sound.  So, they dispensed with them and, instead, mounted their drivers on individual baffles or in pods no bigger than they had to be.  Save for their bass drivers which were in a box- presumably for reasons of efficiency- the mid and high frequency drivers were out of the box.  This way allowed for a greater sense 3D imaging in a more recognizable soundfield.  I had DQ10's back in the day.  They made me conscious that the placing my speakers in my room could contribute to more realism, too.
