LGK 1.0's BIG Brother?
« on: 2 May 2014, 09:12 pm »
Danny,

Both my wife and I really like the (as yet unpainted) LGK 1.0 speakers in our bedroom system. In fact, I like them so much that I've begun wondering about what else is out there in the single driver world. I'd be very interested if you had something else like a 5", 6", or larger(?) driver. Alternatively, if there is no such speaker offered by GR Research, would you be willing to make any recommendations?

There are some disadvantages by letting the driver diaphragm size increase. The off axis especially falls off really fast. Stored energy is also a problem as moving mass goes up.

If you really want to take things up a notch then just limit how low the LGK has to play and let something else handle low frequency duty.

I had a pair of the LGK's on stands about a foot out in front of a pair of Serenity Acoustics Super-7's. I played the four 12" open baffle woofers of the Super-7's from about 90Hz and down with the little LGK's while filtering off the lower end with some inline filters. I know, that's crazy huh, but the results were stunning.

Sorry if I've missed it, but do you have any plans for a two or four driver configuration to limit distortion?

Working on a four driver design right now. Two on the front and two on the back. And only the top driver on each side plays full range.

Could be very interesting....

Danny, were the LGKs just as designed/built in the boxes, or were you running the LGK drivers OB?  I was thinking the same kind of combo would work out well, but was a little concerned that the little LGK driver didn't have enough cone area to move enough air in the range just before the servos take over.  Great at all the things the LGK does well, but maybe a little "thin" in the middle when paired with the big woofers?  I know I'm maybe just splitting hairs, but curious to read your take?

. . . and I still think the LGK could make a darn fine "tweeter" in and easy to DIY OB design. ;)

Jonathon,

The LGK's that I was listening to were in their desktop style boxes.

Danny,

Thank you for that info. I'm pretty much ready to buy a double 8" Rythmik with the paper drivers. I don't want to build my own because it won't look as nice (due to my less than wonderful carpentry skills!). I want to hear how it sounds with all my speakers before I commit to buying a second one.

I told my wife that I wanted to paint the LGK's to give them a finished look. I was shocked when she said she liked them the way they are! Even after 23 years, she still surprises me.
