Intersting vinyl find
« on: 30 Apr 2014, 03:13 am »
Hi,

Stopped by Amoeba Records in SF last week and came across this LP. It plays backwards and of course I had to buy it!  I have at least one other LP from TACET, which use all vacuum tubes in the production and they do sound very nice and warm. It was quite fascinating to set the tonearm near the spindle and watch it move towards the outer edge of the record, where it stayed until I lifted the tone arm. The theory behind this is that many classical records start out softly and finish loudly near the end of the record where there are more groove deflections, causing the needle to mistrack and distort the sound. By reversing the typical process, music can also be transferred more loudly. "Balero" was the first LP to use this method. May have to pick that one up as well! It could be fun to bring one of these records over to an unsuspecting friend's house or to a Hi-Fi store and watch the reaction as they try to play it like a "normal" record.

Hi RPM123.
If not impolite, may I ask how much you paid for it?
I hope one day it will be available on Amazon,
so I can buy it.

Hi RPM123 and all.
I found it, but I don't see on the picture the wording :
Play backward,
maybe it's because they have cut off the bottom of the picture.

I will check in my wallet to see if I can afford to spend 27 USD on one LP.

16", usually 33 1/3 rpm, transcription discs were used by the radio networks from around 1930 to 1970. They were cut inside out and outside in (and the label marked accordingly) so that the transition from the end of one side to the beginning of the next was not so audible by changing audio quality with the change of groove speed.

That's very interesting. If I'm not mistaken, aren't CDs recorded this way too?

Back in the day, I heard a friend's three-sided "Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show" album. One of the sides actually had two sides, and which side was played depended on how you dropped the needle on it. The original master must have had two styli cutting each each concentric groove at the same time.

Yes, they are. The TOC (table of contents) is inmost and the data is in a spiral out from there. That's why the unrecorded area, which looks different, is visible next to the outer edge, and if the disc is full (79 minutes of audio) it looks the same across the whole surface.
