How hot does it really get?

Hot to touch. Not so hot that you can't keep your hand on it, but hot enough for you to think twice.

The one that I have would be more about 110-115F.

Measured or guesswork?

I'd be happy to add my own guess but I'm still waiting in the dark :(

My cheap a** barbeque thermometer is telling me it's around 115. After being on for a few hours in a warm house I can't leave my hand on the unit. Due to this I'm definitely concerned about the lifespan of the unit.

The sound however is even better then I had hoped for. A very impressive portable unit for sure!! If this is all I had to listen to, I think I could be very happy, that is with the right headphones.  :thumb:

It was just a guess but put your hand to your forehead - it's around 99. We can feel a degree temperature difference. It's certainly much, much warmer than my forehead.

I can't download the Windows 2.2 version of the software so it's going back to Mike.

Using my remote infrared thermometer the Geek Out got to 110  in 15 min, when using hi impedance input but when I switched to the low impedance it dropped to 108.

I am the very happy owner of a Geek Out 1000. When I backed it on Kickstarter I had high hopes. Nine months later it arrived and I have to say the sound quality far exceeds my expectations for a little headphone dongle! One hears very deeply into familiar recordings with a wonderful sense of the detailed textures of the instruments' tonality and the musician's touch. The snap and pop of bass along with the finely filigreed treble is a lot of fun, the midrange is best described as lush and dripping with tone.

Yes it runs warm, during the backers' feedback period while LH perfected the design we asked for More Power and Class-A output stages and they obviously obliged. Given the concerns expressed here I used a FLIR camera to take the little darlings temperature after being powered on ~6 hours.

Sitting on my desk, visible light image.

Given that 108F is only 42C and commercial grade parts are rated to 70C and industrial to 85C I decided the warm operation is a feature and not a concern.

Tested out dac on laptop with Senn 650s and it sound very good, but when I tried it with my amp or with a Staz headphone with tube amp there was a loud hum. I read there was a ground issue with laptops, will try it with my Mac Mini when I get it back tomorrow with new PI Audio PS installed.

Has anyone else received(or not received) their Geek Out?  I bought in to their campaign back on August 21, 2013.  I sent an email on 5/5 to Gavin Fish via Kickstarter (which sent me my original email thanking me for backing his campaign) asking when I might see my geek out but so far have received no reply.

Regards,

Randy

According to their last update only something like 5 remained unshipped. I would try cs@lhlabs.com. They were pretty quick in getting back to me when I contacted them about my missing unit.

I havent got mine as well. The CS is not exactly the best. They got back to me alright telling me it was shipped on April 3 to the address on file. Upon asking the tracking code, I have got zero replies.
Still waiting.

I must be one of that group then!  No indication mine has shipped.  Just delaying comments so far from them.

For any of you that have the Geek Out, a new firmware upgrade is available.  The upgrade was done to correct a volume issue some were experiencing with Windows.  They also added a couple of filters, you can read about them here:

http://lhlabs.com/force/geekout/2081-geek-out-firmware-1v5-upgrades-and-change-log

The improvement is sound was immediately noticeable to me, an added bonus is that my little BH 2A3 amp now goes to 11!, of course YMMV.

It is reversible but I doubt you will want to revert back to the old firmware unless you use the 3D Awesomfier which was dropped with the upgrade.

This is a really great sounding little DAC in my system.

Best,
Ed
