Toshiba up-date.
« on: 12 Apr 2014, 12:29 pm »

Hi all.
Some of you might remember that I have ordered two Toshiba EL-84 tubes from TC Tubes and the performance of the Toshiba tubes were not up to my liking or up to what they should have been (According to me).
Mrs. Chelsea from TC Tubes took back the tubes (With no re-stocking charge) and replaced them with two Genalex Gold Lion that I have chosen from their good reputation.
Well I just got them and installed them in my Decware SE-84C+ and they are working fine.
Even at this early stage of the burn in, if I compared them to the EL-84 Electro Harmonix that I had for a few years, the Genalex are a little sweeter in the mids and highs.
Which is good, because the original EH were a little shouty and combine with the Omega 7F extended range drivers, it made the sound a little bright, I said a LITTLE bright?
Of course I will add a few more hours to them and then report my findings.
Therefore I can say that TC Tubes and Genalex are both good, TC Tubes being very good.
I also bought a few extra tubes from TC Tubes and report on that later on.
Thanks.

Ericus Rex you are the one that recommended to me the Toshiba tubes.
However, you made me discover TC Tubes with a great customer support service, therefore: Thank you.
Below, proof of what you wrote me:
If you decide to splurge just a little, you can get the pair of Toshiba 6BQ5/EL84 matched pair for $64 from TC tubes.  They should sound better and definitely last longer than any current production EL84.
I could not find my original post, that's why I am starting a new one.
I've just learned that Genalex Gold Lions are made by Electro Harmonix.

Hi Guy,

I'm glad this turned out to be a positive experience for you.  Please keep us posted on both the tubes and your progress.

Great photos too, love the little figurine.  :D

Hi Jake.
The little figurine is called Tintin with it's dog Snowy (Milou in French)
Tomorrow, I should be doing more listening, with more CDs.
therefore, soon I will post more comments.

Glad you've got the  Gold Lions in hand are are liking them Guy.  Hope you eventually hear something back from TC regarding what they  find with the  Toshibas you sent back,  there must have been something wrong as I'd think they'd normally be a  decent tube like Eric  was saying.

Hi Jay.
Mrs. Chelsea from TC Tubes told me that the Toshiba tubes tested good
on their tester,
but as I told her and she agreed, that the ultimate test would be to try them
on a real amplifier, unfortunately, she said:
They did not have on hands an amplifier that uses the el84 tubes.
Therefore, I am still waiting from her to confirm what I have experienced.
In the mean time, I am enjoying my Genalex Gold Lions tubes.
Thanks for your comments.

Hi FULLRANGEMAN.
Returning something to the seller or manufacturer is always something
I try to avoid for obvious reasons...

Hi all.
I have now two sets of el84 Electro Harmonix
one set of el84 Genalex Gold Lion
three 6922 of various brands and
two 5AR4 Sovtek.
So, I am good for quite a while.
Regardless of what combination I use,
they all sound good to my ears.

Hi all.
My Decware SE84C+ SET amplifier came back from repair
and it's back to work.
I did a comparison between my Electro Harmonix
and my newly acquired Genalex Gold Lion EL84.
The EH as definitely more bass and maybe a little more details,
the Gold Lion as less bass but, but is smoother in the mids and highs.
Which one do I prefer, I would say the EH, but for some aggressive music, I prefer the Gold Lion, so I will keep both of them and play switcharoo depending on the music.
Now, while my Decware was at the hospital, I was using my spare, my Niteshade Audio NS-10 6L6 SE pentode 10 wpc, I can say for sure that the Decware SE Triode even at only 2wpc sound way better, more natural that the SE pentode.

Just wanted to share with you.

Came to mind when I listen an Dynaco ST70, not memorable.
