For Sale: Beautiful Black JRDG Capri preamp.
« on: 11 Apr 2014, 01:37 pm »
I'm interested in purchasing the new JRDG Capri S2 preamp. Otherwise, I would not consider parting with this jewel. I bought my present Capri about 2 years ago. It is pristine but, due to use, some of the lettering has begun to rub off of the remote. Use of said remote is the reason why the Capri itself is pristine. No one ever touches it. As I said in the heading, the unit is black. It has the phono card and outperforms the Parasound JC-2 handily. In fact, I replaced my original Capri with the JC-2 only to realize my mistake and so I bought the Capri I am now selling. I have all of the original Rowland packaging and inclusions.

The Capri is compact, efficient, quiet, elegant, user friendly, and beautiful. Very likely better than whatever you are using. Read up on it.

Selling for $2200 including shipping in the contiguous 48 states.

Hard to believe this is still for sale. It's a Jeff Rowland full function (it has a phono section) preamp for only $2200. Google this thing and see what has been said about it. Guido Corona replaced an Audio Research Reference 3 with the Capri and rhapsodized for months about the shocking improvement it lent to his system. The hook was in and he has since progressed to the Criterion Pre and 925 mono blocks. That's a progression I wouldn't mind making.

Still no interest? Is it because the AC community is unaware of what the piece offers? Maybe I was wrong to assume that this piece was well known.

The Capri is comprised of a chassis that is milled from a solid billet of aluminum. My unit is anodized black and includes Jeff's optional phono card, suitable for use with any phono cartridge. It is fully balanced from input to output. Input #1 is dedicated to phono. The other 3 inputs are all line level, two of which are XLR and the other is RCA. There is a bypass circuit for use with home theater processors. It also provides two outputs, one XLR and one RCA. Capri is very compact at 13 inches wide x 6 inches deep x 3.5 inches tall, including feet and sorbathane pads. The feel of it is very substantial, like a little brick. Also includes a metal remote control that is solid , small, and fits the hand very comfortably. It has 6 buttons in a vertical array. Starting at the top is input selector. Under that in descending order are: Mute, Volume+, Volume -, Balance Left, and Balance Right. The front panel has all of the above plus a phase reversal button. Power consumption is very low and preamp is intended to remain on all the time. There is a power switch, however. Reliability of Rowland gear is notoriously high, as is resale.

Capri is extremely refined and extremely quiet. Expect it to compete with preamps costing up to twice its original $4000 price. It mated very nicely with my NC400 mono amps which will be up for sale soon. A package deal of amps and preamp can be arranged.

I have ordered the new JRDG Continuum S2 integrated as a replacement.

I've found AC not to be the place to sell stuff if you need to do so quickly. I think desirable items below about $1000 are pretty easy for many in this hobby to manage without a lot of financial distress. But when you start getting around $1500 or more, people have to be much more careful about their decisions......unless it is something that can be very easily resold for little or no loss if it doesn't work out. For example, Pass Labs gear and McIntosh seem to hold their value nicely, so the risk factor is lower. I have been in this hobby a pretty long time (around 15 years) and have never heard of the Capri. This doesn't mean it isn't awesome, just that $2200 might be too much risk to me. To perhaps the fewer who know better or have more experience, $2200 may be an amazing bargain. If you need to get it sold, Agon is still the place to go for the most part especially in cases like this (in my opinion).

Addendum: I just looked up the JRDG Capri on Google. I didn't realize JRDG = Jeff Rowland Design Group.
You might want to list it as Jeff Rowland (which I've heard of) in the title. I know others can look this up too, but people can be pretty lazy sometimes and often don't read.

in response to seller's query, imho, a photo or 6 would help sell a $2200 item.

all the best -andre

Thanks for the input, gentlemen.

Here is a link showing the Capri S2 preamp currently in production. Visually, it is identical to mine.

http://jeffrowlandgroup.com/us/preamplifiers-capri-s2-preamplifier.html

As stated in the ad above, my unit is all black. From what I understand, the S2 is only available with platinum face. It also has transformer coupled in/outs and an optional DAC card which was unavailable in my iteration.

Visually both versions are identical.

However, if you require seeing photos of my actual unit, send me a PM including your email address, and I will take some pictures for you. I have always had difficulty publishing photos on AC.

Things didn't go exactly as planned. Instead of buying the Capri S2, I bought the Continuum S2 which is Jeff Rowland's integrated amplifier. It contains a Capri S2.
So now I have this magnificent Capri for sale along with my NCore 400 mono blocks which were assembled for me by the esteemed Mike Galusha. These are not only great sounding amps but they represent the ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing. Mike had a pair of  dead Parasound HCA 1201a monos in his shop so he offered to build my NCores inside the Parasound cases. The results were predictable. Great NCore performance in loaf shaped Parasound cases. Worked out well.

I'm offering a package deal of my JRDG Capri preamp and the NC400 monos for $3650 and hiding the offer in this comment section to see if anyone reads it. This offer is not advertised anywhere else --- yet!

Both the preamp and the amps feature fully balanced circuitry throughout. They are dead silent through my high efficiency horns. This is a very successful and sophisticated combination. It's compact, runs relatively cool and, of course, uses very little energy.

Lazy me - after some ten weeks I remember that I still want to sell my JRDG Capri. So here is a well overdue bump.

Please do yourself a favor and research this preamp. It will surprise you to learn just how good a piece it is. Most of hi-end audio seems shabbily built opposite the Rowland gear. It could easily be the last preamp you ever need. I'm going to pro gear.

Bump time for this beauty. I just can't believe no one has shown interest in this unit. Please don't make me resort to using Audiogon. Do some reading. The Jeff Rowland Design Group Capri preamp with phono and remote. All original everything. Probably still under warranty. I'd have to check that for you.

I'm sure that the Capri would be an upgrade in most systems.
