I was replying to another post but i thought this idea deserved a post of it's own:

""I leave everything on , except the BC-1, as when I did the display burnt out.   .

It would be nice if the display in Bryston Gear could be turned off. Many Cd/media players allow the display to be turned off 'when the disc is being read', but NOT if the media is stationary or not present.
Bryston should have an option to have the display off at all times. Only briefly popping 'on' for say five seconds anytime a button is pushed remote or on face. Would be way better.
Then the item could be left powered on and NOT wear out the display.
(I never leave my Sony SCD777ES on for only this reason. if the display could be 'off' during on but not in use i would LOVE that feature.)

I think it's a good idea from both (a) an aesthetic visual preference and (b) not introducing noise into the system from a potentially noisy display circuit.

As far as burning out the display, I've owned and seen so many components that were 30+ years old, and although some of them developed other operational problems, the displays seemed to stand the test of time.  I would tend to think the Bryston display failure was pretty rare unless a faulty batch was sourced.

HI Folks,

Yes display burn-out is very, very rare these days but some customers like to turn it off in a dark room to reduce ambient light.

I only have the display on at the beginning to better read the time and tracks. When listening I turn it off . James , it is an easy thing to replace ?:thumb:

it is nice to have choices... as my Brystons are on anyway.. there are lights... however if you are using a bcd-1 and all your components are not emitting light... well it's good too
choices...  I listen to head phones and sometimes i prefer to lay on the rug and in in my little apartment ..despite black out curtains... there is some light...
being frugal i can simply place a small piece of cardboard in front of the bcd-1 ...   but it is BRYSTON and how many companies offer so many choices
I have an old rotel CD player and i will hook it up this summer and see how BIG or little the differences are to the BCD-1
I PREFER to do listening at night, but I work full time so sometimes i can only listen to music walking around and getting ready to go to work for 2pm
i run or use an elliptical trainer  and race runs    as well... I love running   I rarely have a rest day from working running and walking  so
 bye for now

My present CD player has the options of 3 brightness settings or the ability to turn the display off. Where the ambient lighting level in the listening room is very low - the display setting stays on the dimmest level when it is on.

Be well...

Manic moose will have an option to not update the screen during updating and audio playback allow the screen to turn off after it turns off.  Also we no longer use LCD displays in our digital products as they were proned to burning out and have switched to more expensive but more reliable vacume fluorescent displays.  The microprocessors controlling these displays have also been programmed to not allow the screen brightness to exceed 40%, greatly increasing the displays life expetency by nearly 50% on top of its 5 year operational life expetency at 100% brightness (I think it's five years, I maybe misremembering).

Both the BDP's, SP3 and future products will make use of VFD display's.

Cheers
Chris
