A tube amp to drive my Fostex FE206E speakers
« on: 16 Aug 2004, 10:43 pm »
Hi folks

Just wondered whether anyone could offer any help with the above. Im building some single-driver speakers (the first I have ever build without a crossover!) using the Fostex FE206E drive units and am wanting to buy a decent tube amp with which to drive them.

I would rather buy a kit, but am not too concerned here. Any recommendations? I don't mind spending a bit more to get something special, but would rather not go above $1.5k if possible. About the only one on the list so far is the Decware SE84C-S.

Am matching up with GK-1 preamp.
Not too concerned about power output as Fostex drivers are 95dB or so, and have dual home built subs for low end.

TIA for any sound advice

Luigi

You could check out one of the consonance tube kits from diycable. Diyhifi is the supplier for overseas.  They have a forum over on audioasylum.com.  I own the Ella amp.  The Joplin amp or Billies(lady day) kits are solid performers.  The kits are basically point to point wiring.  The amps respond well to upgrades and mods.   The Billie monoblocks are very good and I think in your price range.  Good luck

Check out the Bottlehead site for some of their premium kits.  They have two that I've seen that are very nice and in your price range.

Have fun. . .

You could do much worse, for much more, than this:

Or this model, for only $499.

since your speakers are 8 ohm, go with the extreme version of the Zen Select.  Shorter tube life, but better sound into an 8 ohm load.

I'd also add the Fi X 2a3 amp to your list to consider.

Any SET designed amp from ASL is a worthy choice.
