My Cheap & Cheerful Hi-Fi Project (Now FOR SALE!)
« on: 19 Mar 2014, 02:15 pm »
I was visiting my friend who is a professional violinist and couldn't help but notice that his music system was probably the worst sounding I've ever heard, basically plastic salvage crap from 80's. I decided to try and build a musically satisfying system that a poor musician could afford...

The point of this exercise was to see what would be the cost of a relatively high quality sound system using the least expensive DIY components.

FOR SALE:
1. The source - Sony PS-1 SCPH-5501 Modified CD Player with integrated remote. (SOLD)
2. Preamp - 128-Step Relay Controlled Attenuator with remote control kit in mid-sized aluminum enclosure (all eBay) - $195
3. Amplifier - TPA3116D2 in lg-size aluminum enclosure (eBay) - $100

All cables are DIY.
Programmable remote controls PS-1 CD functions and volume on the preamp.
The amplifier is equipped with delayed trigger input which allows on/off operation via preamplifier.

Unfortunately I could not make my own speakers so this component is not included in my project price calculations.

The results were quite excellent. For a comparably low cost (very low cost) I was able to put together a system that would rival systems many many times its price in terms of sound quality.

The total parts cost for the entire system was calculated to be under $200.00, the most expensive part being the remote controlled preamp. It took me approximately 5 days to cobble this entire system together once all the parts were in place, and now I have a great present for my friend!

EDIT: Friend politely refused. Now it is for sale - $390 takes it.

Nice project and pics :thumb:

Any links on the preamp kit/components?
I am looking for something similar to that.

Looks great.  Would you mind to share your DIY cable material list?

Speaker cables - "white lighting moonshine": http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/whitelightning/moonshine.html with "Nakamichi" banana plugs (eBay), shrink-tubing, braided jacket from dollar store (for Xmas decorations).
RCA - just DIY using some RCA connectors and shielded signal cable (monster cable, silver/teflon, etc.)

Anything else would be "too expensive". I was aiming for total DIY.

Very nice  :thumb:

Can you describe the power supply for the amplifier?

Standard 19V 6A brick power supply from eBay. 12V wall-wart for preamp.

The small board in the amplifier is delayed power-on module that is powered by preamp's on/off switch via umbilical 1/8" cable (trigger), and it switches the power for the amp board with 5 sec delay: switch on the preamp via front switch (the controller chip in the preamp takes several seconds to boot), 5-6 seconds later the amplifier is switched on. Turning off the preamp turns off the amplifier as well.

The big 4700uf 35V cap is there to smooth out the remaining power ripple from the brick power supply.

I thought I recognized the picture  :D

That's a reasonable price for those who wish to save the effort of sourcing the parts and assembling.

It's impressive what you can do with so little money (when you have the knowledge)  :thumb:

Well, my friend declined this "expensive" gift, and as I am in the process of building a second identical system, I wish to put this system on sale (CD, Pre, Amp) - $390 takes it.

Of course this all has to be moved to the For Sale section.  It might have been better to start a new post over there, but what's done is done, no worries, I'll just move it now.
