William Donati record of "Bach-jazz" Playing is just so-so, but I really liked the final paragraph on the album cover.

"...with an osmium-tip needle, such needle should be replaced after 10-15 hours of normal playing time. If the sapphire type needle is used, change after 25-40 hours. If a diamond needle, change after 800 hours. The arm weight on the phonograph should be occasionally checked also and 8 or 9 grams is the normal pressure. Improper arm weight can scratch or mar the surface of this record....."

At that weight, you could engrave brass also!

Hi Blackmore.
How can someone get away with such stupid recommendations...
Might as well use a construction nail, it will be cheaper.

From the sound of this record I'm guessing some excessive weight may have used. There's no way this was listened to more than a few times; it's just not that good.

Mark,

I have a manual, Shure Stylus Force Gauge that I'm not using. You can have it, if you need it to recalibrate your tonearm to 9 grams!

I am assuming that is just a very old record. 8gm tracking weight is correct for some older vintage tables.

Yes, it is an old record and mono too! Din, I'll use the bathroom scale if I need to recalibrate my arms to that weight.

I found quite a few ECM vinyl which were dead quiet vinyl, but some of them were meditation grooves; oboe and sitar and such. Just not into that right now and the Goodwill store on Highway N will become more eclectic soon.
