11 Great Products Under $100
« on: 11 Mar 2014, 01:05 pm »
By HomeTheaterReview.com, March 10, 2014 http://hometheaterreview.com/11-great-av-products-under-100/

The article included the Monoprice 8247 5.1-channel home theater satellite speakers & subwoofer, the RadioShack sound level meter, the AudioQuest DragonFly DAC, JRiver 19 media software, HDTracks downloads, and filled in with some stuff mostly directed at home theater specifically.  Enough audio meat to make it interesting to the Cheap & Cheerful audience.  Maybe you could chime in with your best under $100 purchase.

Interesting article.  They list some very good products, but IMO, JRiver is an excellent value, maybe the best $50 I've ever spent in audio.  The ODAC is also a great value but with a case (nice case by the way) it tops the $100 limit.  I think there are a couple Schiit items (that little dac and headphone amp) that are right around $100.  I'd include those on the list.

I was listening to my system with the ODAC last night and it sounds very good.  Once I deleted some protection software, and reloaded JR19, everything ran smoothly and sounded great.  For Redbook 16/44 music, the ODAC is way better than I expected it to be.

Not sure how the Dragonfly got on the list, it's $149. I'd add Audirvana+ to the list (for Mac users).

I would put the Pure I-20 dock into this list. It's a great Iphone dock that has a decent DAC, with the option to run a cord to a better DAC. Get a lightning adapter and Spotify and your streaming a huge catalog of HiFi. Not the last word in resolution, but great for a limited budget or one who wants something simple.

Is beer on the list?

It depends on whether it makes your system sound better or worse!

I agree with roscoeiii on two products he listed and that I bought.
The scale, but for me I paid 45 USD here in Vietnam
and the Spin Clean that I bought from Amazon and was brought to Vietnam by a relative.
I bought a pair of Omega 7F, but if you take only one it`s under 100 USD.
That is one of the best buy of my whole life.

Does being a closeout special really qualify it for the list? Seems a little... short term.

Some audio companies last less time than the Dragonfly 1.0 has been on closeout.  :)

For traveling purposes I have found nothing better than a Sansa Fuze rock boxed MP3 player.  Use with FLAC files stored on micro SDHC cards.  Picked up a refurbed one for $30 some years back.

I'd add Porter Ports.  At $36 bucks a pop,***

Just to be clear, you're talking $36 for a power outlet, right?

How is that "Cheap and Cheerful HiFi?" OK, maybe "cheerful" for the scammer peddling them...

When and if you ever try one you will find out why. Highly recommended.
