Feedback on new listening room design?
« on: 10 Mar 2014, 01:37 am »
I've throw my drawings around on the AVS and wanted to see what my fellow VS fans had to say about the plan.  I'm planning on kicking off the project soon and it will be a combo 2 channel and theater space.  It measures roughly 15x19, and is in the basement on a concrete slab.  The room will be isolated from the rest of the house and the ceiling will have additional measures taken so sound doesn't leave (and sound from upstairs doesn't creep in).

I have a pair of VR4 S/R towers powered by Mark O'Brien's Rogue Audio M-150 Tube amps.  Per Albert's recommendation, I'll be running the home theater portion of the room with a "Phantom Center"so no center will be used.

Here's the drawing:

Here's an images of the style of the space that I will mimic:

Beneath each of the arches I'll install a sound absorbing panel, the front corners will have bass traps.  The one thing that I am not sure about is how all of the wood will impact the sound in the room.

Thoughts/concerns?

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Rob,

Personally I would swap positions between the amps and the subs. I would also add some diffusion on the ceiling from the area close to the arc to before the couch.

Other than that, I think you look golden :)  You sure you don't want a Visiun Center and one 150? The Visiun is REALLY good.  :icon_twisted:

I know, I skimped on the screen

Thanks Jack - appreciate your feedback.  Oh, believe me, I want a Visiun...

I'll add an outlet for another M-150 near the center for that future add...  Did you try yours without a center, or did you always have one?  Albert's advice to go without a center was that the VR4 SRs would really not be nearly as utilized with the addition of a center.... yet, I fully recognize that the

I initially focused on the soundproofing to keep sound from going out, and now I need to direct my focus to making sure the sound that is inside isn't being hurt from the actual space.

What do you suggest for use on the ceiling?  I was thinking of some OC703 panels for the side/ceiling.

The thing with absorption is unless you are actually measuring RT60 vis a vis surface area to figure just how much you need, it can be hit and miss. I would go with skyline diffusors in the center ceiling. They are light and easy to install.

My kids are always yapping, Dad what was that? Dad, pass the popcorn. Mom, scratch my back.    I need a center!

I was watching Young Frankenstein which is mono and the Ls and Rs did fine, not as good as having a dedicated center channel but phantom works, at least for the one sitting in the middle. Dialog might not be so clear from the sides as it will be mixed with L and R front effects. The people in the sides will also have to process the sound of the later arrival time of the opposite VR-4 SR. Multichannel music is less of an issue, much less.

Nothing like having what amounts to three identical speakers out front for movies though. The Visiun is large however and will likely need a custom stand. I lack the real estate to have a HT rack to the side like you do so I ended up having the screen much higher than usual. When we watch, we look like a bunch of astronauts waiting for launch.

Well, you've twisted my arm.  I can leave the space (height) for the Visiun center channel and a third M-150.  Ouch.  Yet, I know that it is the right thing to do.  The skyline diffusers could be added once I have the room setup and take some measurements.

Here's a quick sketch of the front wall.  The height of the riser keeps going down... it's now at only 4"!  With 7' ceilings once the drywall layers go up, the M-150's height, and the screen doesn't leave much extra space!  The final screen may be slightly smaller as I don't know if I want the screen that high up to the ceiling...

Nice!  Anamorphic screen to boot! I'm officially envious!

Hey Rob, what program are you using to make those awesome sketches?

Hi Jack -

That's just Visio for the sketches.  It helps me to visualize things... especially for the sake of screen size.

Thanks for the help... stay tuned... kicking off the build this Spring.

I have the "phantom center" on VR-9's.  Ok with me, but I rarely watch movies.  It serves the purpose for me.  The theater enthusiasts may feel different.

When designed and done, you can measure it and add some more traps. In case possible reposition the gear and have only the speakers in front to keep it "simple".   (I have the same problem that the rack(s) are in front area.)

Alive and kicking. Good point and could be added.
