Seas Excel W17E-002 help
« on: 5 Mar 2014, 06:19 am »
I was up late one night and purchased these drivers. Now my question is. What tweeter would you recommend complementing these guys?  The seas T25CF002 look to be alright but appear to fall off quickly after 10K.

Now the biggest problem. I am a noob when it comes to this stuff. I am looking over the threads here to read up on how to build an appropriate crossover.  I will also look into building an appropriate box for the drivers as well.  I am just hoping you guys can give me some advice on where to start and how or even if these drivers are garbage and I should just stick to my Connoisseur CB- 20 book shelf speakers. I plan on using them home audio/ video speakers.

Thank you for all the help in advance.
Dave

I don't see the fall off after 10k on the Millenium tweeters...? but those are fairly pricy items.

I don't have any particular advice other than that those should be nice woofers. Personally I would go active, possibly with a passive notch filter to minimize system noise from the hefty 5k peak. The Lab or Enclosures might be a better location for this thread.

Good luck!!

Maybe I am just not reading that printout correctly. I am use to looking at something such a hp or tq curve and so going by those standards it appears to have the fall after 10k. Can you point me in a location to where I could learn how to look at it?  Also by active your suggesting that I have and amp for each piece in the system correct? I.E amp for drivers and amp for tweeters? Is this just so that I can more accurately calibrate frequencies to the desired speakers? I am also going to have to look up what filter you are talking about.
I appreciate your input.  If you can think of a different tweeter that would work that is cheaper I am all ears.
Thank you
Dave

Nice purchase  :thumb:

There are a number of tweeters you could consider.  Many folks have had luck pairing Hiquphons with Seas Excel drivers.  On the used market you can find great deals on RAAL ribbons, SB Acoustic tweeters, Scan-Speak, etc.  I suggest checking out the Parts Express forum (http://techtalk.parts-express.com/) for good deals.

The two systems I am familiar with to test/design speakers would be OmniMic V2 (~$300) or REW (free) with a mic and preamp (~$125).  There are a number of kind audio enthusiasts out there who will answer whatever questions you might have.  Give it a shot  :thumb:

JohnR's advice was awesome.  An active system is a great way to get started in my opinion.  You can gain knowledge more quickly by measuring and adjusting things on the fly.  There are numerous active crossover options available these days as well.  I couple of the most popular are minidsp, Hypex's active modules, or a unit like the Behringer DCX2496.

Where are you located?

I am actually located in Southern Oklahoma.  Thank you for all the help so far, I will diffidently look at all of this information when I get back to the house. I am currently on the road and just stopped for lunch.  Does anybody know where I could look to read up on how to properly read the data sheets?  I will be building a box for these as well. That I know I will need to read up on because I have made sub-woofer boxes before, but with this I want to be more precise than just reaching a certain Sq ft and making a port hole. I know each set of drivers like specific things and tuned uniquely. Thank you once again. This is a huge learning process for me and it is going to be a bit of a learning curve, but I am ready for the challenge. Worst case scenario they sound awful and I just redesign from there I would imagine.

If you believe the drivers from Seas haven't changed much over the years below are two designs ready for a try.

A completed design:

Another completed design (not in English):

Thank you for posting that.  The tweeters will be over 500 by themselves.  In this case the guy used a passive crossover and really liked it.  If I follow the specs on his sheet would it still be beneficial to do an active system?  If I go active isnt it going to increase the price quite a lot? I mean I dont mind spending cash where I need to but if I can keep from spending over 1,000 for these two little speakers that would be cool with me.
