Need help with ported sub question
« on: 15 Aug 2004, 04:30 am »
I am thinking about making a pair of subs to replace my el cheapo KLH subs I bought from Costco.  They are great and all for what I paid but they don't have the very low end response I would like as well as other features.

I want to use the http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=295-560&DID=7"> quattro series 15inch sub from Dayton Audio either in a sealed or ported box.

Here are the suggested boxes from Dayton:

My question about the ported box is this:  Can I lengthen the port to lower the tuning frequency to 20Hz safely?  The speaker says it is rated to 20Hz so I figure it's okay.

The sealed box states an F3 of 38Hz; how much lower in SPL will it be at 20Hz?  12dB?

I want to use this http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-804">amp

Here's a tool for you: http://www.pvconsultants.com/audio/boxmodel/subsim.htm

Or you can use unibox from that same site.

WinISD is an easy to use backup but has some issues, I forget what they are though.

Now you can play around with all sorts of drivers and boxes to your heart's content.

Two designs I'd be looking into myself: Rythmikaudio's directservo sub and gr research's new sub and passive radiator.

Thanks ohead,

I was looking at the sub system from GR Research and I even messed around with the idea of putting two of them in a 7.5cuft box with a port tuned to 20Hz.  Large box yes.  Monster bass.  Probably too much since I want two seperate subs.  Though I could just do a pair of the passive radiator versions for each front corner.

I've never heard of Rythmikaudio's directservo sub.  Going off to do some research. 8)

I've been thinking of swapping out my cheap ass Yamahaha subs for some serious air movers too. The GR setup looks good at first glance and I plan on doing some resurch and DIY in the future.
