Just put deposit on used VR-33
« on: 2 Mar 2014, 12:49 am »
I am quite excited as I just put a deposit down on a used pair of VR-33 speakers in piano black.  I should be receiving them in the next 10 days.  Looking forward to this new experience.  The VR-33 speakers will be replacing these shown.

Congrats on your purchase. What are those speakers the VR-33s are replacing?

A quick glance at his "system page" says they are Odyssey Audio Kismet Reference Speakers.

They are the Kismet reference in the special Santa Ana Rosewood.  They are going into my secondary system which I listen to more than the main system as my computer is in the same room.  The Kismets will be replacing a pair of Vandersteen 2ce speakers.  I am using Groneberg Quattro Reference speaker cable which is the same wire my Kismets were wired with.  They seem fairly neutral so I will try them with the VR33's first.  I really don't want to replace the speaker cables as they are 20 foot lengths and the wires are snaked under the floor which means I have to crawl through the crawl space (not fun).  I paid a grand for the speaker cables, so they should be ok.

I slept like crap last night and I probably won't get a good nights sleep until they arrive.  Next I need to figure out how I will get them up my side stairs after FedEx drops them off.  I may need to invest in a hand truck.  I would be interested in what others who have the VR33's are using for speaker wire.  The Master Sound cables are out of the question for me because of the long lengths needed and the price.

Hi Bob,

Is it absolutely out of the question to place the audio equipment between the speakers?  If you can move the equipment close to the speakers and have shorter distances to span, you have a wider range of cables from which to choose at a given price point.  Also, shorter cables even of the same brand and model will sound better at shorter lengths.  My experience has been that as the system evolves to increasingly  revealing components, differences in cables and in connection lengths become more easily audible.

Regards,
Robert

Robert,

Many folks suggest that having gear between speakers is less ideal sonically. Jim Smith discusses this in his excellent Get Better Sound book

roscoeiii,

Sure, moving the equipment a greater distance from the speakers reduces the potential for unwanted interactions.  Using longer cables increases the potential for signal degradation and becomes more expensive for any given cabling.  So, it becomes a cost, performance,  and aesthetic optimization issue.  Whatever works best for any user is fine by me.

I will say that when I moved my equipment from a distance requiring 14 foot interconnects to the amplifiers to a position between the speakers with 1 1/2 meter ICs, it sounded better.  Again, that was my experience with my system in my room.  I make no claims that this is the right way for someone else's system.

Regards,
Robert

The system is in the living room and the rack is across the room and off to the side from the speakers.  I have had this setup like this for 19 years with absolutely no problems.  I can't change anything in the living room as I share it with my wife and tv.  I'm sure my cables are more than adequate, just wondering what others are using.   I was told by Klaus at Odyssey that the 20 foot runs of speaker cable are fine as the Groneberg is a large gauge wire.  I believe it is 10 gauge.  The rack is in the entrance to the room next to the couch.  I sit on the couch, across from the speakers 12 feet away.

Congratulations! I am sure you will like them.
Take your time positioning and don't be afraid to try them back closer to the rear wall. I purchased the VR-22s the little brother to the 33s last year and I am still tweaking the position. I have them about 10" from the rear wall and they sound tight with great bass.
The nice thing about buying used is someone else has already gone through the lengthy break in period for you.

I did ok on the price, it's the shipping that is expensive as I live almost 3K miles from the seller.  The wait time on these , new from the factory is quite long and these are already broken in.  They are just over a year old and are in perfect shape.    I  still would like to know what other owners are using for speaker cable?  Should I go with the Analisys plus cables as I certainly cant and would not spend that kind of money on the Master Sound cables.  I am looking for some suggestions?

I'm using MG Audio Planus II Speaker Cables on my VR-35's, and I love them. Haven't heard the Master Sound cables, so don't know how they would compare. I can say that the MG cables are the finest speaker cables I've ever heard, and although not dirt cheap, are a bargain at their asking price.

Do your new speakers have the bi-wire option?
What ever you decide on brand of wires make use of the option. I was hesitant about it but am glad Albert talked me into it.
I don't have the most acute listening ears and I could even tell the difference between bi and single wiring.
Again, hats off to the man.

I've had excellent success with JPS SC3 speaker wire on my VR-35s but they can be extremely pricey - particularly at long lengths.

I also had the opportunity to be a beta tester for Triode Wire Labs new speaker cable and thought they were just excellent.

Check them out: http://triodewirelabs.com/american-speaker-cable.html

Pete's also a great guy to work with.

I am using Analysis Plus Oval Nine speaker cables with my VR-33s. I really like their natural, full-bodied sound, they complement the VR-33s very well and are one of the best values in cables out there IMO.

Speakers should be here Tuesday.  Can't hardly wait.  I bought a nice hand truck from harbor Freight Tools and even got a
custom cover for the back of the hand truck so it won't scratch the speakers.

Great, now I have hand truck envy. Mine is so bad I'm ashamed to post a picture of it.
