Always loved music of course but for 10 years it seems music has turned into something else to me, until I found my a few of my old vinyl in the attic that is.

One spin of Rick Derringer made me go on a buying spree 10 days ago. Now, $500 in the hold and a new Technica LP60 and about 25 new records, I feel I am developing an addiction. My buddy said I need a shrink and I said hey, it is better than smoking, lol

Anyway, sorry for the short story. I am glad to find a site like this to learn, share and trade.

Way to go.  Hopefully you have a couple nice record stores near by.  My first recommendation is a spin clean.  Cheap and cheerful and does a decent job.  Add in a mini vac to suck out what's left and your good to go.  I am so glad I kept all my vinyl.  My Led Zep albums were mint because I bought a record and recorded it to tape right away for use in the car.
The Vinyl Circle is a great resource for questions on table set up, cartridges and anything else you want to know about.  Have fun.

Shrink?  Of course!  Always buy them sealed in shrink wrap!  :thumb:

It's a lot of fun when you are just bitten by the bug.  Enjoy.

And welcome to AC, especially The Vinyl Circle.

Here's some suggestions for keeping the bug in check

- get a record cleaner of some type (whatever you can afford)
- clean 4-5 records at a time
- don't clean any more until you have listened to every side of the new records you have cleaned
- don't go to any more record stores until you have listened to every side from the last batch
- keep the "good ones" in a separate stack for ease of access and repeat listens
- as that stack grows you will be relying on those more and more for your pleasure

That's what I did and that section now numbers about 35 records. Pretty soon it will just be most of my collection!

The distinction between"temporary infatuation" & terminal, chronic  affliction will only become clear if the
condition continues years from now !

Don't think, DO. I did a couple of years ago now (Thorens TD-160 Mk II w/Grado G1+), in large part due to pumpkinman, and it really is worth it.  8)

The hunt is half the fun!  Finding that rare gem in a pile of junk.  Snared a mint copy of this last week for $2.00.  STUNNING sound and performance!   http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/190998124145?lpid=82

happy collecting

I saw him at Baltimore Museum of Art in the 80's, incredible guitar player he had a special guitar
made for him called the harp guitar, when he plays it sounds like two people are playing

Try to find Aerial Boundary's another fabulous record

As you are setting out on building your vinyl collection, I recommend yard sales, thrift stores and craigslist. Lots of good stuff cheap, especially if you buy bundles (craigslist sellers are often motivated to get it all sold at once, rather than having the collection picked through; sometimes leads to LPs for $1 or less apiece).

Best source for vinyl, PERIOD:

www.gemm.com

It networks thousands of B&M stores and online sellers. You create an account with the website and it processes all transactions so you don't have to give your info to each store you deal with. I found stuff there in twenty minutes that I had been looking for for years at swap meets, record shops etc.

I've had the infection for about 3 weeks.  I had been researching tables for about 9 months and unexpectedly found the exact "package" on audiogon.  Two clicks later, I had fallen down the rabbit hole.  I must have 200 hires Album files, SACD's, 1000+ regular CD quality albums (CD media and on dedicated server) and the Vinyl LP's fascinate me!

The sound, the artwork, the nostalgia is like a rewind to great memories from yesteryear.  Independent record stores and just a better music industry - it was culturally significant.  It is directly opposed to the 256k compressed i-whatever "content".  Well, you've got to have "the bad" to recognize "the good".

The online vinyl sources are impressive, some having quality reviews.

Great post, I am so happy to have a vinyl affliction :D

Carve out some money for a good record cleaning machine. It's a MUST if you're hitting thrift stores and flea markets. It's actually a MUST if you're into vinyl period.
