My 2 cents.

The storyline was extremely implausible.  The execution of the movie was very good.  One thing that no-one has mentioned yet that struck me very strongly was the audio aspect of the movie.  It wasn't long ago that the sound of "Space" in a movie still had a lot of hiss and other noises in the theater.  In this movie and the theater I was in the "Space" was absolutely dead quiet.  It almost felt like I was there.  I was impressed.  As a side-note, because the movie was so quiet, everyone in the theater was extremely quiet too.  Again, I was impressed.

My 12 year old son enjoyed it. My wife and I looked at each other 45 mins in and shared an expression of boredom. I never thought to appreciate the silence 'skalos' highlighted, maybe that's the best thing. For me, since I watch movies in a local theater that sells beer, the best thing was the pale ale.

really good point!! - there was something very special about the silence you talk about - by you saying it - i just became aware of the very foundation that made this movie work - the silence

And warning ... spoiler alert ... that scene with Clooney rentering the hatch from the outside, that was an hallucination by the oxygen deprived Bullock character. You weren't supposed to believe that was actually happening as part of the movie narrative. Clooney was already dead by then.

I did notice when I returned it to the video store that it had "Best Movie of the Year - TIME" written on the front. Maybe I'll try again next week, try and put myself in the right mood for it (whatever that is) and try and pay attention  :duh:

We watched it last night on my good old Pioneer KRP-500M plasma.  The picture was amazing.  As previously mentioned the sound was out of this world (pun intended).  My Pioneer Elite SC-25 / Klipsch Reference / Paradigm Servo-15 5.1 system really got a workout.  The silence balanced with the excellent soundtrack had me mesmerized.

The wife and I really liked the movie, too.  Sure it was completely implausible but I find implausibility does not detract from sci-fi, or any fiction for that matter.  Heck 90% of the movies made today are 100% implausible.  It was a very well acted and presented extremely suspenseful movie.  Having always like George Clooney and Sandra Bullock certainly helped.

Made for a very entertaining 90 minutes.

Wow, I dont' get you guys who hack on this film...I was mesmerized by it. I was in awe of the cinematography and the special effects, and regardless of how plausible it was or wasn't(after all, it IS a movie), I was engaged for the entire 90 minutes.

Absolute crap.  The only thing that could make this film worse is if it wins some Oscars tonight.

agreed - there was something special about this movie - with very little dialog - it really got me to feel - what it would be like in space if i were all alone

seems crazy - the premise and all - but if taken on its own terms - it was wonderful

That's what really got to me, as well...it had an authenticity to it that I have never experienced with a sci-fi film before. In that sense it reminded me of the way I reacted to Cast Away. I love to approach movies vicariously, so something like Gravity was the equivalent of movie crack.

They could have given it 70 Oscars, I'm still not going to see it.

Nice...they can keep Clooney and Bullock...two of my least favorites...but looks like the movie won in some of the key areas where it exhibited the most brilliance.

Congrats to A.Cuaron and company.

I thought Bullock was far better here and more deserving of an Oscar than for the one she actually won one for.  She was okay in The Blind Side but the whole thing felt like an after school special to me.  Her performance in Gravity struck me as superb.  Oh, well...to each their own.  Obviously we all like different kinds of films. :thumb:

 I suppose I should read reviews before posting my opinion of a movie

I'll go get it again tomorrow and see... I'll have to go early

How come, though, no-one else started a thread before me... You know, if it's so great and all...

My wife and I watched it Friday night. We both enjoyed it, but she commented that it was too short (I thought the running time was just about perfect for the story). Those of us with backgrounds in science will wince at the twists of reality which build the plot, but there would be no story without them. A few of these holes in the tenability of the plot were especially jolting because the same conditions were portrayed correctly elsewhere in the film, but not where it was necessary for the genesis of drama or the accomplishment of an objective.

The thing is, however, that the drama is intense. The imagery is stunning, as is the sound. After watching 'Ender's Game' a couple of weeks ago, I appreciate all the more the appropriateness of the sound - we only heard what the astronauts heard (the communications between them and interactions with their suits) while in space. The aforementioned movie was also enjoyable, regardless of its inaccurate portrayal of space. Then again, how many films have been as realistic in that regard as '2001: A Space Odyssey'?

In other words, ajzepp, I agree with you. I don't understand the harsh comments, but I think they arise from the juxtaposition of the absolute accuracy against a plot which hinges upon absolute inaccuracy. Eh, it's a science fiction movie. To be honest, what I found most annoying was Ryan's persistent wasting of time, although Matt's fate was right up there (all the way to the Soyuz (how convenient to find it in the same orbit) the weak grip of gravity is accurately portrayed, but when they arrive (in order to have that dramatic moment), it's as though they are back on earth).

Movie of the year? How many times a year is a movie referred to as the movie of the year? I could be delusional, but I swear it seems like 90% of the movies released are heralded as the best of the year (by someone). Having been awarded 7 Oscars, however, this one may qualify as the most lauded movie of the year, but I still wouldn't call it the best. Going into it, my expectations were low (which may have helped), but it was definitely worth watching.

Great post. And yeah, I can understand what you're saying about the inaccuracies sticking out to those with a background in science. Even though I was oblivious to them in Gravity, I actually made almost the exact same point on IMDB about a show called "Getting On". It's an HBO sitcom set in a medical setting, and there were so many things that just would NOT take place on an actual medical unit that they completely distracted me from enjoying the show. (I've been an RN for 13 years.) I made comparisons to other shows like Nurse Jackie and Scrubs, but it was clear that I was seeing the show from an entirely different vantage point than most others.

It's also funny you bring up Ryan's lack of urgency. I sent a text to a lady friend of mine who was watching at the same time we were, albeit from about 3,000 miles away. We often comment during the movie, and one of the things I said to her was how it was driving me nuts how Ryan could be faced with life or death situations, yet seemingly need a fire lit under her bottom. I gave her the benefit of the doubt to some degree when the remainder of the film sort of hinted at some underlying depression.

After all those wins in just about every category I think Sandra was a bit surprised she didn't win best female actor. I bet she thought it was a given by the end of the night.

The camera did flash to her briefly after the winner was announced and she looked pissed.
