Rather than post more to the Gary Dodd Now In Surgery topic, it seemed better to start a new thread since he is home.  Today I spoke to him, and later this week he will be shipping the preamp he was building for me prior to going in the hospital.  He sounds just like his old self but he has a lot of recovery still ahead.  One result of the multiple surgeries and blood transfusions is he has almost no short term memory.  He had no recollection of me or my preamp until Trung brought over a printout of old emails between Gary and myself from last September and October.  Gary's land line phone and email are shut off for financial reasons.  I got the impression from our conversation that Gary is ready to start building preamps, amps, tube buffers or whatever again.  He really needs the income so anyone thinking about a Dodd piece of gear, now's the time.  He can be reached at this cell number:214-682-9097

Peace,
Jeff

Great to learn that Gary is bouncing back and well enough to build products!

Is that a Dodd dac under the preamp? Didn't know Gary was making dacs.
As a fellow Dodd equipment owner, I would be very interested to have more details about it and the sound.

Very nice by the way.

Gary has been interested in dacs for several years now.  He built one for me about 2 years ago- a design involving several knowledgeable people for a manufacturer - never came to the market.  It's very, very good.  Looks like jparker's may be another/newer? variation.

If you talk to him, and he has all that car audio stuff from before and is willing to box it all up and ship it to me, i will be happy to send him money for it. I emailed and called, and did not get a response. Now i understand why.

Best wishes to him..

You asked but maybe should start another thread.

The following is my personal preference:  I have struggled listening to Sabre32 dac chips no matter what they are inside of. To my ears the sound mechanical and medically sterile. It is nothing to do the imaging or sound stage but the actual tonal qualities.  I have and oppo that I feel similar about too thus just use it for videos.  I like the sound of nos Wolfson Dac chips and that is what is inside of this dac along with an Amanero USB board for the hi Rez.  I really like it.  It provides a huge sound stage, does wonderul with whatever I play.  I have been using JRiver and since it just needs to be pointed in the direction of the files, works perfect.  It doesn't add anything to the sound but it does bring out all the tiny tidbits of songs that I don't hear with other Dacs.   I am not sure dollar for dollar you can get a better creation.  I could buy a lamp for 5k or a Dragonfly for a Benjamin, but this is where I am happy.  Listing to live Tom Petty and Natalie Merchant is delightful.  I used to have a Adcom  20 bit and a Sonic Frontiers Dac 2, I'm better off with the Dodd creation. Also, it's on batteries, so the blackness is even better.... And works when the power goes out.  Hope this helps.  Try listening to Chris Rea and The Road to Hell. First two songs.

I know a couple others here have some of these with different incarnations and ideas from others attached.  ;)

Well, yes he is.  But ol' Dave is no slouch, you sly dog.  I've known you to peek under the hood of a dac and make improvements as well.
