Newb looking to learn more. :-)
« on: 25 Feb 2014, 06:17 am »
Hello all!

I decided to join here on recommendation from someone else. Seems like a great place to stretch the proverbial wings out and learn how to fly.

I've been into stereo gear for a couple years but of course music for much longer. Used to play trumpet for 7 years and have a pretty good ear for orchestra and classical. But beyond any of that I love music and I love to enjoy it in quality, hence why I am here!

I have two setups, one which is my main setup that I listen to 95% of the time and then I have my other setup in the living room which is used for concerts, movies, big dynamic pieces, stuff like that.

My main setup consists of the following:
Speakers - Kef LS50s
Amp - Marantz MM7025
Digital Source - DSPeaker Anti-Mode 2.0 Dual Core hooked up to a computer running JRiver
Stands - Atlantis 28" sand-filled, spiked
Analog Source - Denon dp-45f w/ AKG P15MD and Musical Fidelity VLPS-II phono stage
Room - 9'x12' with 4 2'x4' acoustic panels

The other setup is all vintage and right now consists of:
Speakers - IMF RSPM Mk IV
Amp - LXI AM-4004
Pre - LXI AM-4005
Tuner - LXI TR-6004
Source - Playstation 3, Playstation 4, PC with JRiver

I like both but for most music I prefer the more modern setup.

Anyway, besides that, I hail from Edmonton, Alberta. Looking forward to getting to know you fine folk!

Jeffrey

Welcome aboard!

I still own and use Fried Model A speakers (from after Bud retired) as my LF/RF speakers in my A/V system.

Welcome  :thumb:
Your modern system looks well thought out, not the work of a novice! I would love to hear your thoughts on your DSPpeaker Antimode. You could try playing around with some amps if you feel the inclination, N-cores are becoming more affordable of late it seems, and there is a lot of buzz on the internet direct Job amps, but I have yet to hear one. The other thing I have been watching closely are the 8" servo subs for OB applications from Rythmik and GR. I am personally lusting after little OB sub towers, for quick, beautiful bass that does not load up the room in a multifamily building. Anyhow those are my quick thoughts. Have a great day!!

Welcome Jeffrey!  I haven't been on this forum that long myself but I find it to be very informative.  The members are willing to help and the industry participants bring a lot of audio experience to the table.

Enjoy!!  Don P.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys.

I'm looking forward to participating more and getting out of "newb" status :-)

drummermitchell - don't recall going on a trip, though I sure wish I did!! I think you may be thinking of someone else. I recall I bought a pair of Gik 242 panels from you as well as a pair of stands.

pslate, thanks for the kind comments! The DSPeaker Anti-Mode is a great product. One of the best purchases I have made to date. Being in such a small room there was a nasty peak at around 50Hz which caused the bass to be a bit overwhelming on some tracks, and muddied up the sound. With the bass corrected it helps the entire frequency range out - it is well worth the $1200 MSRP in my opinion. I am also using its internal DAC and it is acting as the pre-amplifier for the Marantz power amp. I am looking at upgrading its external power supply and have heard this brings about an important improvement, but in stock form it sounds great to my ears. Very clean and clear and overall transparent, which to me is the most important thing when introducing something else into the chain. No matter how you use it, I think it will be beneficial.

I am another DSPeaker Dual Core user, and a huge fan. If you haven't played around with the settings other than the DSP for the bass, I'd recommend it. I use it as a balance control due to the odd shape of my room. And it is amazing how a manual EQ in the digital domain can affect the sound of your system. Robert Greene for one is of the opinion that there are very few speakers that can't be improved by a little EQ tweaking in the room. Also, by playing with EQ settings, you can get a more forward or laid-back sound, or a more warm vs. bright sound. And the Dual Core has those 4 presets, so you can play around and have easy access to a setting that suits a certain type of music or recording (toning down an overly bright recording for example).

Given thought to a sub for those LS50s? Or satisfying enough bass for your purposes?

This is my first post, and I'm about as green a newbie to audiophilia (I know, not a word), as they come.  I was encouraged to purchase a DSpeaker - principally because of my room (bay window/piano), but then I spoke with a little more season audiophile who said the DSpeaker was probably technically able, but over his head.  He had taken home a McIntosh MEN 220 (which I think covers all three sonic ranges rather than one in the DSpeaker).

Any other confirmation on the DSpeaker?

Oh, I guess I should do the obligatory gear list.  (Keep in mind this is a second hobby/growing passion with two sons in college and the older one about to go to medical school!  Get your wallet out and drop your proverbial pants!)

Emotiva DAC (the little stealth), Mac Mini the source

TAD-60 (about to get another one)

McIntosh 2100 (completely refurbished) - like the sound.  (Plus it was a family piece and am intending to pass it down.)

Vandersteen 2Ce's (not signature) and looking to send these off with the golden child to med school and upgrade to a better Vandy.  Does Vandy still upgrade these things to sig level?

Oh, wiring is Goertz for the model.
