Bryston 11B / 3B
« on: 25 Feb 2014, 12:05 am »
Hello, half a year ago I bought the used combination of a Bryston 3B main and 11B preamp from a dealer here in germany for a very good price. They replace a Cambridge Audio C 100 pre and the QUAD 606 main. After listening to the Bryston combo since then, I have to say that the Bryston might be the last amps for the rest of my life.I never listened to amps with such a detailed sound combined with fastest response, although there were build in 1993! I only have three questions :
Is it possible to get a service manual of the 11B?

Is it possible to upgrade the 3B to a newer revision?

How high is the bias of the 3B ( I have to replace the bias pots ) ?

Thanks for your help,
Greets from germany,
Mike

Guten abend, Mike.  Wie gehts!  My great x 5 grandfather departed Kusterdingen (12 km NW of Reutlingen, BW) arriving in Philadelphia in 1768.  Always great to hear from a fellow Deutchlander  :thumb:  Below are links to a users manual, manual addendum containing schematics and test procedures and a marketing cut sheet.  Don't know if this is what you're looking for.

Hi ,thanks for your fast reply the manuals for the 11B are exactly what I was looking for, great ! By the way my hometown ( Mönchengladbach ) is about 270 miles away from Reutlingen. Mönchengladbach is 20 miles away from Düsseldorf, which is the captitol town of Nordrhein-Westfalen. I work there for QVC Germany as Broadcast engineer. Again, many thanks for your help. The reason for questioning how high the bias of the 3B is, was a problem I had after I replace the C's in the power supply. After replacing, the left channel got hot without a signal, I must have touched the bias pot on this channel, the bias was nearly 1A without signal ! I didn`t want to transform the 3B into a class A amp  :duh:. I was lucky the 3B is such a tank of amplifier, another amp would die in a fire, I think. The two pots need to be replaced, I think they aren`t mechanically good anymore.

Here in germany soon carnival will take over, but only in the rhine area, three days of insanity !  :o

I forgot a very important thing :

I heard in the radio that one of my favourite guitar player has passed at the age of 66, very sad !

                                    R.I.P. Paco de Lucia  1948-2014

I will always remember Friday night in San Francisco !

I too am sad to hear of his passing.  One of my very favorite guitarists is Al DiMeola.  I have the re-mastered 45 rpm vinyl recording of Paco and Al with John McLaughlin recorded live in San Francisco.  I highly recommend it if you don't already have a copy.

Mike,

I just noticed you work for QVC in Germany.  My office is just an hour from the West Chester, Pennsylvania headquarters and 10 minutes from the huge Lancaster, PA warehouse operation.  Small world indeed!

Hi Bill, your`re right the, world is becoming a village...I find a solution for the problem with the bias pots, when I replace the pots I will measure the bias current after one hour operation,
so I get the correct value.

Yesterday I had the time for listening several hours and I`m very glad that the Bryston amps work perfectly together with the Sonus Faber Venere 2.5.
