AVA T7 vs SS
« on: 14 Aug 2004, 01:10 am »
OK,

So I am trying to understand FET Valve designs.  What advantages (or I should say differences to be correct) does a design like the T7 offer over similiar priced SS pre's or slightly higher priced pre's (like AI L-2, Belles 21A, Blue Circle 21.1, JUST as examples).  More dynamics and detail while retaining that tube bloom and smoothness?  Does tube rolling impact the T7 like a normal tube pre?

I am not trying to start a "ours is better than yours" thread but I am looking for a pre that has alot of detail and dynamics while retaining that tube smoothness and bloom.  I have a pair of AES Six Pac Mono's I am working with.  What are the thoughts behind the FET Valve design?

Any owners also want to share their thoughts on the pre?  I am intrigued by this "hybrid" design.

Thank You,

Matty

AVA Hybrid vs Tube Pre's or SS Pre's

I meant for my topic to be the differences versus tube pre's or SS pre's.  The pre's I listed were just tube pre's, and my topic title just said SS.

SORRY.

AVA T7 vs SS

I haven't listened to other brands of SS pre-amps in a long time, but I own an old SS AVA model from prior to Omega.  I use it during occasional waits for upgrade of my T7.  The T7 is more detailed and dynamic by far, and the bottom end is more solid.  Image is also better.  By the time my T7 returns, I've become accustomed to the SS pre and think it sounds pretty good, and I'm always "jaw dropping" amazed at the improvement with the T7.  The only other pre that I've heard recently that sounds about as good as the T7 under the right conditions is a passive model that a friend owns, and it is subject to the load and impedence problems one might expect without careful matching of other components.
