Testing ECC40 Tubes Help Please
« on: 21 Feb 2014, 04:33 pm »
I want to test some ECC40 tubes in my Jackson 648S. I know the filament is 6.3v. I'm not sure how much to put on the plate. They say these are between and 12AU7 and 12AX7. Anyone have an idea where to set the tester so I don't make smoke?

Thanks in advance!

ECC40s are equivalent to 6SN7s.  Do you have a socket for them in your jackson?  I have a 646s and no socket.  I was going to have someone make me an adapter eCC40>6SN7.

You are correct. I don't have the socket for the ECC40.  :duh: I will need to see if I can make an adapter one day. Thank you for your help dminches.

I see there are adapters on the internet. Finding one in the USA is next.

Hi fellas,

tubeburner, having just glanced at the tube data sheets for these tube it does NOT look like the ECC40 is a direct sub for the 6SN7.  This means you need to be careful and make sure it will work in the circuit you plan to use them in.  Yes you will most definitely need some sort of adapter as the base of the ECC40 is Loctal not Octal.

I'd hate to hear of some catastrophic disaster to your equipment so take your time and make certain you can use them as a sub for the 6SN7.

I just want to test them before I use them in my Lampizator Dac. I really dislike installing a tube in gear without a good test. These  were sealed boxes, so probably no issues, but nice to know for sure.

Tubeburner, I struggled with the same situation with my Lampi.  My guess is that your ECC40s are likely NOS so you can feel pretty safe in just using them.  That's what I did.

The ecc40 has a rimlock base not Locktal, adapters are available on eBay for 9 pins and octals. Just search ecc40.  Good luck!
