Denon DP-37F VTA ?
« on: 7 Feb 2014, 05:46 am »
I recently bought a Denon DP-37F and it works very well.

I want to raise the arm just a bit because my stylus is about one micron above the record surface when it's moving about on full auto.  It's going to hit the record if I play one with even a little warp.

There is no comment about it in the VE database manual but there are slotted flatheads on either side of the tonearm pivot that look likely.  They are complex looking though with a tiny screw inside, then a 'normal' slotted flat screwhead, then an outer ring also slotted.

Wondering if anyone has experience with this before I start leaning on it please ?
Don't want to bust one of these arms just trying a little adjustment.

Are you using the original mat?

Hi,
I don't think there is a provision for arm height adjustment.  If there is it would be in the owners manual.

What you're describing isn't arm height though, it's cueing height.  Does the back of the cart look too low when playing a record, or is it just during auto location?  If you need the entire arm higher, sometimes you can use a thinner mat.  If you have the stock Denon mat, this might not do it.  If that is the case you might need a shorter cart for that table.

I assume there are no instructions in the owners manual for cueing height adjustment.  Before taking out any screws it would be a good idea to check the service manual for a similar table/arm like the 35F.  There should be an exploded view of the arm parts and a description of adjustments.

There might be another option, but I've never done it on this table so I can't say if it's viable.  That is, get an assortment of metal washers that will fit the mounting bolts in the arm base and use them as shims between the arm base and plinth.  To do this with minimal trauma, loosen all the bolts first and insert the washers one at a time without removing the arm entirely.  It would be a good idea to take the bottom off first and see what you're actually dealing with.  It could be that raising the arm will disconnect another function.  Sorry I can't be more specific with modifications.  The easy thing to do is replace the cart.

Thanks guys,

Yes original mat.

Do any of these 'wood' Denons have VTA ?
I'm told the 47F doesn't either.  Seems to be a major 'oversight'.

Easy thing is to replace the cart but I have the same cart on both TTs (also JVC QL Y5F) so they sound the same. I'm happy with the carts (Ortofon MC 10 Supreme). I got them at a bargain price and it would cost more than I want to spend to replace them at that quality level.   I might have as much as 3 microns clearance but having to check for impact spoils the whole 'auto' thing.
I've been after one of these 'wood' ones to match the JVCs look for a couple of years.  Pickin's are slim and costly around here.

'Spacers' was a good idea but it look like it would possibly disturb other functions on this complex auto arm.  I will look at it a bit more.

I have the original cart and it is shorter than my Ortofon Supreme I've just put on by a few millimetres.

Thinner mat might be the only answer, wherever I'm going to get one of those around here.

My DP-62L has adjustable VTA.  I think that feature started with the 59L (spaceship motors) and up to about the DP-72L.  If that TT has the Q-Damping arm then there is nothing you can do short of thinner mat.  You might want to look at cork or deer hide.  Don't know if marcmorin on AK has any deer hide left.  I think you can buy the cork in different thicknesses at Lowes and HD or Michaels.

Thanks for the models that do have VTA.  I like those spaceship/UFO models but they're out of my budget and even harder to find around here.

Finding something thin and inert I can cut to shape will be on the long term plan.  There are few useful shops where I live in the hill country of Australia and none of those that you mention.

In the meantime I have found the source of my trouble right in front of my face. The original cart is about 3MM shorter... AND ...  I have a 2mm carbon fibre insulator between the cart and headshell. (I have it because it does make a very noticeable difference).
That 's 5mm of extra height over the standard. That would explain it.

So right now I have a choice of quality versus convenience. ( and hoping I don't bust an expensive bit while going for quality).

Unfortunately, that is one of the issues with the 2M series.  As they were designed with the Rega, Project and MH tables in mind, their shape and height are built to accommodate those tables tonearm mounting.  They can cause problems with the older TT's that had lower tonearm mounting heights to start with.  If you could compare the 2M to a Rega cartridge I think you would find their two heights to be comparable.  As you are in OZ you just need to find a "home supply, hardware or craft store to find the cork.  If not you can probably order it from EBay.

2M has got nothing to do with this.  Perhaps you are talking generally.

Anyway, Job done. It's the screw/threaded rod toward the back of the arm with the white bit at the bottom. Unscrew it to let the arm lift higher.

It's really cueing height rather than VTA.

Glad it worked out.  The cueing height adjustment wasn't in the owners manual?  How did you find it, just started trying things?

You have the same cart, Ortofon MC 10 Supreme on both your tables.  Do you use them through the same phono stage?
I am wondering about your impression of the JVC vs the Denon.   Maybe this is inappropriate due to use on different systems or something similar, but I'd be interested in your impressions.

Nop. Not even indicated in the Owners Manual at VinylEngine.  Maybe it's in the Service Manual but I haven't seen that.
Got the answer with photos at the Steve Hoffman Forums here : http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/turntable-denon-dp-37f-vta.342620/#post-10033267
Both tables go through the same system by way of a switchbox.
Have yet to do any comparative listening between the two tables.
