Speaker matches
« on: 23 Jan 2014, 07:38 pm »
Anyone have comments on speakers that match well with Odyssey products. I now own a new upgraded Khartago and used Tempest (thanks to Klaus) and will be evaluating speakers in the next year starting with the Axpona show this spring. Thanks

Check out Klaus' speakers. I have a pair of his Lorelei Kismet speakers in a small room and couldn't be happier with them. I should say I have a pair of Kimet mono's for amps too. Great match.

Odyssey speakers are very very good. I heard them a Capital Audio Fest this past summer, and they make beautiful music. You can actually get a reasonable idea of the timbre, clarity, richness, and musicality in the last 3 minutes of this Youtube interview from that show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCdBFwG4a7Q

The Harbeth 30.1 speakers at the same show (Red Wine Audio room) were also terrific. You need to have an idea of how big your room is (do you need large speakers to push enough air in your room volume for satisfying bass?). I've really enjoyed Daedalus in the past at shows. Check out Fritz speakers (Stereomojo has good reviews). Obviously there many good options.

Klaus has previously mentioned here how much he likes the synergy with the Magnepan 1.7 or even larger models. I don't think you'll have to worry about your Odyssey amps driving anything you like.

I have an interest in Sonus Faber Venere 2.5/1.5 on stands and also wonder how this amp would match up with Klipschorns.

Have you heard the Sonus Fabers and like them? The company was bought out, the speakers are made in China now, and the 6moons review is tepid, but I haven't heard them. If you like them I can't see why the Odyssey amps wouldn't do them full justice.

Klipschorns are a very different beast. I don't know if the Odyssey is your main issue here: which sound do you prefer? Try to get to an audio show or as many local shops as you can. The Odyssey amps are not limited in what they can drive well. The bigger question is your tastes and preferences in speakers.

The reason I mentioned Klipschorns is because it has been a lifelong goal to own them someday. I would more than likely use a vintage amp or receiver with them should I ever work that out. I did listen to some Sonus Fabers at Axpona last year and they were the best sounding speakers I heard at the show. So I have been researching them some and they are also very attractive as well. I have owned a pair of Linn Keihlidh's in the past and have really come to like that type of sound. I currently own Monitor Audio and will be using these presently with my Odyssey setup.
Have not heard any of the Odyssey speakers yet, hopefully will come across them in the future.

I'll second that. One really has to go no further great synergy which is most important.

I've had an Odyssey amp in-house since 1999.  In that time I have used them with at least 15 different makes and model of speaker.  I have never found them to be a bad match with anything.  They do however do exceptionally well with Vandersteens.

Yes, Vandersteens. Wish I still had my 1's and 11's.

I spoke with Klaus a little bit tonight via email about the Khartago and some possible upgrades. He told me that my NHT 2.9's will be a great match with that amp. I'll be calling him tomorrow sometime to discuss things a little more when I put in my order.  :green:

I heard Klaus' Lorelei speakers at the CAF last summer and knew I was going to take them home. I was completely bowled over when I heard them. They are wonderful for a.small to medium sized room like mine.  Dynamic with full range and rich timber.  The biggest problem is there is no place to listen to them except for shows, but combined with the other Odyssey system components Klaus' room always shows super well.  Ask him if he will be at.AXPONA.   Most recently had a strong review in Absolute Sound CES coverage. Definition of system synergy is the all Odyssey system in my opinion.   That said, the Odyssey speakers are.all hand made and it would be hard for him to make too many more than he currently does.  They are well priced and I am sure Klaus would love to make you a  pair.  Enjoy your new.components!

Odyssey amplifiers will drive any speaker regardless of the load with zero problems. you can take that to the bank and cash it.

Well, if they'll reportably run the later Scintillas w/no prob, than basically any speaker. There might very well be tougher amp loads than the late "1-ohm" only Scintillas, but would have to be rare as hens teeth. One of the most infamous "amp killers", even some Krells died on those speaks and those are the most recommended amps for Scinnies. :icon_twisted:

That said, it doesn't always mean the speaker owner will like or prefer the sound, tubes, Class A, etc. :)

I power my Magnepan 1.6qr with the Stratos Plus and I feel it is a very synergistic combination. The amp never heats up and I never detect that it is running out of steam.

what makes good synergy is low zout to high zload, volts on zload make power, this also less stress the power supply... :green:

My "new" Odyssey Plus is driving my "new" Acoustat Model 3's with no strain and sounds delicious.

erniek,

I can attest to the comments here and give you my take...

I have heard Odyssey amps in many flavors with quite a few speakers. I can tell you that with the Kismet Monitors and Lorelei speakers the sound is incredible! I have seen first hand many jaws dropping to the floor at various Audio Shows for good reason....no kidding! The synergy is out of this world :D

Of course there are other speakers that will also mate with the amps very well. I will personally stay away from the Klipschorns...I never like them.
