4BSST2 crackling sound at start-up
« on: 23 Jan 2014, 10:05 am »
Hi All,

I have a brand new 4BSST2 and makes a crackling sound everytime the power-up button is turned on.
Has anyone have the same issue? Is this normal or an indication of something more serious?
Many thanks.

My Bryston 4B-SST2 power amp is relatively new (bought in Aug/2013) and I never had a crackling sound but more of a ZZZZT sound.

Is it a rather quiet sound? My4B-SST² makes a bit of a 'buzzzz' tone right when i press the start/on button. Like the caps are charging up? Definitely a relay 'click' moving in there. But it is a small sound. not very loud. I accept it as normal.

Hi

When our amplifiers first start up there is a 'ramp up" circuit or 'soft start' circuit as we call it which reduces the start up power (so you do not blow circuit breakers  or fuses etc.) on turn-on. Toroid power supplies need about 3 times the current to start up as compared to normal running requirements.  So it is common to hear this ramp up sound on startup.

Since having my 4-7B-SST's since 06 and the 28's since ,have never heard a crackling sound.
On power up it's always a ZZZZT sound, the 28's it's just a bit longer sound and that's it.
I'd have it checked if it is as you say a crackling sound.

More of a zzzzt zzzzt zzzztt, definitely sounds like an insulation breaking down or a small arcing.

I leave the 4bsst on all the time(in winter) as well as the preamp. It's wonderful sounding. If I have to turn it off for some reason, there is a slight
"crack" on starting but it is nothing. I also have the volume turned right down on start up.

I.m going to really worry if someone reports a whistling sound, sorry just being  Monte  Pythonish. :jester: Really , I don't think there's anything to worry about like James explained about the transformers. :thumb:

Having had several Bryston amps with the usual electro sonic buzz upon start up. Was always cool especially for new guests. Noticed our new 4bsq has a new kind of chatter upon start up like relays clicking...after speaking with mike Pickett in tech sound is normal for the new version off amp serial 6821. Also noticed power supply caps are now CDE. Vs Panasonic was short run in serial 4600 and the long early supply of Nippon.  FYI .
