My Red Rosewood Soundscape 8's Impressions and Pics
« on: 21 Jan 2014, 03:21 pm »
Backstory: I came out of grad school in 2010 with a 15 year old 32” CRT TV, 20 year old JBL receiver, and some 4” Infinity satellite speakers.  The TV was barely viewable, and the audio quality sounded like chipmunks talking over the radio.  Here’s my all-white living room which we got around to painting last summer.

I upgraded the sub and receiver first, and I was literally blown away by the improvement with the Marantz SR6006 and the SVS SB13.  Things spun out of control shortly after that. ;)  A combination of hearing saturn94’s HT2-TLs, Jim’s customer service, and the reptile hobby doing well financially motivated me to upgrade my front speakers.  I had already upgraded the Infinities to SVS S-02 series sealed monitors (pretty good), and then GR Research N3S sealed monitors (very nice).  But I knew I wanted towers.  I had originally contemplated STSC, but I knew I’d just say “what if” if I didn’t reach for the Soundscapes.

Upgrading the finish was the hardest part.  We found some nice rosewood on closeout pricing, so I bought the whole batch.  My jaw literally dropped when I first unboxed these SS8’s and saw how beautiful the finish was.  I chose the red dye over the rosewood, and I’m very happy I did so.  I also chose to upgrade the capacitors to Mundorfs, although I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to tell it made a difference.  It definitely didn’t hurt.

I’m driving them with the 3 year old Marantz SR6006 (I know, probably the record for the worst device to ever drive a Soundscape) but soon to be upgraded to the Marantz AV8801.  I’m currently running the Soundscapes full range experimenting with and without Audyssey engaged.   They sound incredible for both movies and stereo listening.  They are accurate, natural, and very detailed.  My focus is always the mids and the highs, and I love how the Accuton and the RAAL have come together in this design.  Bass is great too, of course.  They simply disappear, which makes it so hard for me to describe them.

A huge thank you goes to Jim Salk and team for producing such a high-quality and beautiful set of speakers.  I will continue to discover new capabilities of these speakers for many years to come as I upgrade my electronics.  Credit for the “assist” goes to Jim K (saturn94) who provided the in-home audition of the HT2-TLs and all the kind Audiocircle members.

See that tan chaise to the left?  That was about 3 months worth of work finding a chaise lounge that wouldn't stick out so far as to obstruct the SS8s.  Boy oh boy that was a lot of stressful shopping with the girlfriend.  In the end, I'm happy with how it turned out.

Some 2013 babies I produced.

Thanks again, Jim Salk and team!

Nice! You've compensated for the lean times. The only drawback of owning Salk's is seeing them in other desirable veneers!

Beautiful snakes too! They look like art. I had no idea of the coloring varieties possible. I might be able to have one here if they were available as statues.

Hahaha!  Choosing a veneer was impossible.  I knew no matter what I did there would be others that would catch my eye.  I suppose it's like marriage.

I'll see if I can turn a snake into a statue and send it your way!  Lol.

Looks great, Jon!  :thumb:

Can't wait to check them out in person. :D

Having one of those beautiful snake specimens is tempting, but then there's the exploding rats....  :o

was an incredible room transformation

those snakes are so colorful, I can see why they have been quite a lucrative business

but when will we see the snake draping on the ss8 money shot?

Haha, alright I'll work on this.  I was going to do a snake draped on the girlfriend, but she didn't want to do her hair so declined.  I'll see if I can convince her next time.

keep an eye on that radiator condensation
you wouldn't want moisture on your left SS8

Tom, thanks for pointing that out.  That was something I was concerned with in purchasing the SS8s, since even capacitors have a temp rating on them.  I've temp gunned the back of the SS8 and about 10" of it gets up to a max of about 90 degrees when the radiator kicks on.  (I don't think 90 would be an issue, the Mundorfs are rated to 150 degrees).

I also don't think condensation is an issue.  I've never noted any condensation on that radiator, but I will double check it just to be sure.  Thanks, -Jon

You could build a simple plastic vertical guard by taking a slotted stand and putting a cut to order sheet of plexi sticking out of it vertically.

Thanks for the suggestion. :)

I'd worry more about heating and cooling the veneer and speeding up the aging process.  Lots of close by heat might dry out the veneer.

Looks good otherwise.  Not sure the 8801 is sonically any better than the 6601 but if you must have a multipurpose system then not having a 2 channel stereo preamp means you may not extract the highest quality sound.  Therefore, changing processors for 'sound' may not be a bump up.  Those with the Marantz products may have more insight.  I know that my Onkyo HT processor sucks as a preamp for 2 channel listening.  It is very thin and has lousy soundstaging even in direct or stereo modes.  Something to consider.

The snakes are beautiful.  I hate snakes.  They give me goosebumps and not in a good way.

Nice room btw.

I have a bunch of "Reflectix" insulative material laying around.  I could easily cut a strip and attach it to the back of the Soundscape.  This would reflect most of the heat back out towards the radiator.  I can also pull them forward another inch or so.  Jim S didn't think those temps would be a problem, but I may do the Reflectix anyway since everyone now has me worried.  Lol.

From everything I've read, the DACs in the AV8801 are a huge step up from the receiver line.  Much better SNR as well as XT32 for the satellite speakers vs the XT I currently have.  I think it will be a good upgrade for an all in one system, for now at least.  I don't plan to pay full price on it, however, so I'll shop around.  Thank you for the input!
