I am beginning my search for a cd player to be used as a transport to my Eastern Electric Dac Plus. I will be using the digital coax connection. I am looking for something in the $400-600 range, new or used. I have a large collection of mostly Redbook cd's so SACD is not a necessity but HDCD decoding would be a plus.
I have been considering a Cambridge 840C which has gotten good reviews and has a digital "pass through" for use as a transport. I have also read some positive notes about the Marantz cdps : CD6005 or maybe a refurbished SC8004.
Open to all suggestions...
Thanks,
Paul

A transport is a transport. any Cd player with digital out will 'pass' the HDCD signal to SPDIF
Even if the player itself does not decode HDCD.
Any old high quality Cd player will do.
I look for top of the line or near top of the line older player, and usually plenty of them being sold cheap.

Elizabeth, true...regarding the signal but I am trying to take in all the other factors: transport mechanism,  power supply, jitter, vibration control etc.
I would definitely love to find a well built top of th eline player in my price range  :)

Pioneer Elite PD-65 CD Player with stable platter mechanism or the Krell KAV-300CD with VRDS clamping mechansim. Both are excellent designs and are built very well.

Any of the older JVC with the first three letters being XLZ.  XLZ-1010, XLZ-1050, and more.  The first two are built like a truck and have a very stable transport with optical outputs.
