Hello!

I noticed that there are differences in finish of the top conver on Bryston digital products, namely the BDA-2 D/A converter but the same might be valid for other Bryston products as well.

My BHA-1 amplifier, for instance, has a smooth finish on the top cover while the previous BDA-2 I had had a very rough finish and the difference was quite apparent. However, the new BDA-2 has a finish identical to the BHA-1.

Has anyone else noticed this as well? Is it specific to serial number / date of manufacture or something?

I am planning on purchasing a BDP-2 and would like it to be the same smooth finish as on the BHA-1 and the new BDA-2 (not the previous BDA-2 I had which had a rought finish).

Can anyone shed a light on this?

Thanks!
Antun

This is highly interesting! Can anyone else please comment on this as well?

What I would like to know is why there are differences in this finish.

Someone from Bryston perhaps?

Cheers!

A few years ago, we changed from painting these top covers to powder coating them.  This change took place long enough ago that it's safe to assume that all the tops referenced here are powder coated...

The earlier powder coated tops had a somewhat rougher finish, while the current version is relatively smooth, although still much less smooth than any of the painted tops.

I'm going to assume that the BDA2 with the rougher top had one of the early powder coated tops installed, while the other two units used the newer smoother top.  The nature of the powder coating process means that slight variations in finish can be expected, but I had a quick look at the tops we have in stock, and the finish is very consistent.  I think you are safe to assume that a current production BDP2 will have the same finish as your BHA1 and BDA2.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike and thank you for a detailed explanation!

The previous BDA-2 had a more recent manufacture date than the BHA-1 and it still had a rougher finish. I suppose it had to do with what you had on stock at the moment of assembly.

I hope you don't mind but when I place an order for the BDP-2 I will tell Mr. Potisk of Avitech in Austria to contact you to make sure it is a newer finish.

Best wishes,
Antun
