Phono loading plugs question
« on: 19 Jan 2014, 07:00 pm »
Hi,

My Ayon preamp uses phono loading plugs that are plugged into RCA inputs on the back of the preamp.  Since I purchased the preamp used, it didn't come with any loading plugs, so I'm just using some old plugs that I had for an old preamp to load at 100 ohms.  I'm wondering if changing these plugs to higher quality RCA plugs and higher quality resistors (or whatever it is that is in these types of plugs) might yield better sound.

Thanks,
Winston

Hi and welcome,
Most people with that level of equipment prefer nude Vishay:

Tantalum has some devotees, for a more seductive/romantic sound:

I've found some people who prefer Caddock.  They make a resistor that looks like the nude Vishay, and there are some who like carbon for a softer sound, although not recommended for a unit that gets hot.   Hope this helps.

Hi Winston,

As neo noted, using different types of resistors for loading resistors changes the sound.  I have also been told that using good quality plugs is worthwhile - particularly metal-barrelled plugs (as these provide a level of RFI screening of the load resistor, compared to plastic-barelled  plugs).  I went out and bought several pairs of WBT RCA plugs on the strength of this tip.  :)

It may also be worth trying different values (unless you are dead sure the optimal value for your cartridge is 100ohms).

Not sure if you're into DIY or not - if you don't have the equipment and would prefer to buy some already made up, Vince Hamilton of 'Once Analog' (in Oz) sells high quality loading plugs:
*  his web-site is: http://www.onceanalog.com.au/
*  his email address is: onceonly@tpg.com.au

BTW, the fact that your Ayon preamp uses phono loading plugs that are plugged into RCA inputs on the back ... is a great feature.   :thumb:  My own phono stage uses this technique (Allan Wright was the first person I came across who did this) but most mfrs use dip-switches etc - which, IMO, degrade the sound (compared to them not being in circuit).  A parallel pair of input RCAs is a simple solution - and gives you the ultimate loading flexibility!  :)

Andy
