Well Tempered Simplex
« on: 16 Jan 2014, 04:52 am »
Hello all...new here. I currently own a VPI Scout w/ Dynavector 10x5 and am thinking of moving into a Simplex. I am in the Tampa, Florida area if someone knows of a dealer in this area. Or is Mike Pranka the best source?

Otherwise any current Simplex owners that moved from a Scout, I'd love to hear your opinions.

Contact Mike, he'll steer you in the right direction. For the record, I've had better luck contacting him by phone.

Mike has been great even by email IME.

Re: VPI. I had a Classic in house that I directly compared to the Simplex. I felt the Simplex's superior coherence, musicality and fluidity in presentation was more valuable than the VPI's better extension and dynamics. When you factor in price as well, it made the decision very easy for me.

Mike has been pretty good so far via email.  Will report back when something happens ;)

Simplex in the house.., The Scout is in transit to it's new home. Mike has been a BIG help.

Great table that keeps me awake at night. Loved getting this dialed in today...each little adjustment surprised me. I have a feeling I will do some more but it's hard to screw up the sound.

Testing battery power...so far it it is a tad more stable then the wall wart.

Had a couple of Wife free hours this morning and did some more fine tuning...azimuth on the fly, some vta and +vtf adjustment and less damping...all good things. Battery power is making it easy to switch off the table...no reaching back to hit the toggle

Yesterday I added the black weight and moved both closer to the pivot point...not sure it made a big difference but the manual suggests keeping it closer which IME is always better.

It may be too early yet, but any thoughts about sonic differences between the Scout and Simplex?

YES...I agree with other reviews I had read before hearing the Simplex. Scout is more dynamic but a little less musical. I find this table to be more "liquid" as has also been expressed in others comparisons.  An odd result is better sound from my headphones...silkier and less brightness. Base is pretty solid so no real change there except less sub input. Also...less rumble...which is especially good considering my speakers [Alpair7 full range drivers].  Still early in the game.
