Toe-In

Hi All,

I have a pair of floorstanding, bottom ported Super 6 Alnicos and love the sound even as the drivers are getting burned in. I usually run them with the ports blocked .

Currently I have them placed in an equal lateral triangle with the listening position and with slight toe-in. By slight I mean that I can just see the inside side of both cabinets. The speakers are about 2 feet from the back wall and about the same from the sides.

I am wondering about toe-in and what others have found to work best. When I see photos of other Omega systems it seems as if few folks are toeing them in. I also wonder how many of you block the port with the foam ball?

Best,

Paul

i have super 6 Alnico monitors. I also have them slightly towed with open port about 18 inches from the back wall. By slightly towed i mean that they are aimed at the outside edge of the sweet spot.  My listening area is about 7  + feet from the speakers. Never tried no tow in.

I, too, have the Super 6 Monitors. They don't come with foam balls, only the XLR floorstanders have those.
I have mine set up 2 units apart and I'm listening 3 units away. I have mine toed-in about 10 to 12 degrees, but I find them very forgiving as far as placement goes.

Thanks for the replies. I am experimenting but am finding that the slight toe in is the best so far. These are really great speakers...

With your current set up playing some tune having a strong middle component like a singer centered as they usually are in a recording (mono and center), when seated in the listening position move your head from side to side about a foot or more each way and notice how stable the center image is. Now cross the speakers tighter, so they are aimed at your knees not behind your head as they are now, and listen to that same piece of music and notice whether the image is any more stable when you move your head side to side. If it is, then that's the better sonic arrangement even if it looks a little strange to most people.

By this stage, speakers firing straight down the room or toed in "just slightly" look strange to me, because I know the stereo sweet spot is unnecessarily narrowed and also sound is being sprayed against the side walls in the process, muddying up the focus for no good reason!

Lose/lose when it could be win/win.
