Moving really slow today
« on: 6 Jan 2014, 02:01 pm »
I got injured in my soccer game yesterday. I think I have a cracked or broken rib.

It was a long night and getting out of bed this morning was very painful. I may go back to bed for a while.

This doesn't hurt as bad as last years separated shoulder, but it hurts. A cough is like a stab with a knife. Ugh.

After my wife cracked a rib on our sailboat she discovered "Quantum Touch" healing.  Now I have my doubts, but she got training and works with any and all family or friend that has a pain.

Sorry to hear that.  Ribs injuries are definitely painful.  You'll need to take it pretty easy for 6 weeks or so.

Danny,
Bummer!  Hope the ribs heal soon!

Typing with a splint on my left hand.  Tendenitus and trigger finger in my left thumb and mild carpel tunnel in the left hand.   Have to keep this on for about 5 more weeks.   Just glad no surgery at this point.

It's the little things that we do everyday that often gets taken for granted that are now pretty tough.

I did manage to hold back a sneeze till it passed. Whew....

I am going to have to do number 2 pretty soon and not looking forward to it.

So you're not coming north anytime soon to help shovel us out from 15 inches of snow?

Yeah, yeah, but I love playing and I do still play at a pretty high level, and despite my age I am still the fastest running guy on the field in any of the recreational leagues around here. Speed has always been my friend.

And I usually avoid contact or those 50/50 situations that can result in injury. But every now and then I do get hit unexpectedly.

I banged my ribs slipping in the shower a couple of years ago.  Took a couple months to feel normal and there's really not much you can do except ice and advil.  Take it easy.

When I broke my ribs I found wrapping them helped to some extent. Also, holding a pillow tightly to your abdomen when you have to cough or sneeze can help. As for BM's, fiber and fluid (lots of both). A stool softener may also help.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the well wishes guys.

This hydrocodone seems to be helping.  :D

Be careful with that stuff. A lot of people get addicted to opioid narcotics such as hydrocodone while recovering from injuries. Plus it slows down digestion, causes constipation and the associated pain and gas.

Another problem with pain meds is masking and the resulting overuse. When I broke my ribs I had to go back to work after only two weeks. The first night I took enough ibuprofen to get through the shift and ended up injuring myself more without knowing it. The temptation to get back to normal as quickly as possible is strong, especially when you are young but pain at this point has a purpose. It keeps you from moving those bones around before they have a chance to heal properly.

Not trying to preach, just the voice of experience speaking with 20/20 hindsight.

according to Ototoxic Drugs Exposed pg 359, Hydrocodone taken in combination with Acetaminophen can cause severe hearing loss, esp with very high dosage. Go easy dude....

Get better soon, Danny.  And everyone else!  I have become more "personally aware" of the cruel joke life plays on us.  When we feel young, but heal like we're old.  Not really liking that reality.

Thanks guys. I take pain meds pretty sparingly. What I have now is left over from the separate shoulder injury. I quite taking them as soon as I could.

Take it easy for a while

I broke what I believe was at least 3 ribs a few years ago with a mountain bike crash..... hurt like heck for a long time.

Not much you can do for them except just take it easy and try not to cough or sneeze.  real hard to to that in a Michigan spring when you are allergic to just about everything  :duh:

Years ago I broke 5 ribs in 2 places each. Funny how I never had to sneeze much until then...Had to go buy a waterbed to sleep on to help relieve the pressure. There was no comfortable position, and feeling the loose ends clicking back and forth everytime I breathed for about three weeks was not fun at all. Know how you feel.

At least you weren't sabotaged by one of your own. When my teen-aged daughter and I were horsing around (years ago), I sprained my ankle chasing her down a flight of stairs. When she grabbed me around the chest to lift me up she cracked a rib. Then she gave me her cold making me have to cough a lot.

But this isn't helping you a bit, now, is it?
