It's a Pretty Impressive Snowstorm....for St Louis

Hiya guys,

No doubt you're seeing close to the totals we've got out here in the sticks. We're around 8" so far and according to NOAA.gov looks like we're going to get another 4" or so. Then the temps drop like a buzzard shot with an Uzi. -10 tonight and a high of -4 tomorrow.

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=38.47830&lon=-90.7529&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=graphical

At risk of playing meteorologist (Ryan HELP!) comparing the base and composite reflectivity loops, the upper level disturbance is growing meaning more moisture is being added to the storm (I think). At some point the upper level moisture is going to make its way down and dump even more snow on us. Hence the extra 4" this afternoon.

Hope you guys made it to the Panic Isle at Schnucks in time. 3-4-5" of snow, no big deal for the region but a foot...well, St Louios will be shut down tomorrow and maybe part of Tuesday during the clean up.

So BISL, are you doing the time lapse photos today? Maybe smokin' a nice piece of pork while you're at it?

Stay safe and stay off the roads until they're clear.

...now to see if I can find those saucer sleds and get the grandsons out and have some fun :thumb:

In Chicago (SW burbs) we got about 6 inches since yesterday evening, and more is coming! They already closed the schools for tomorrow in our district.

Funny thing about this winter  - tomorrow it is gonna be 36 F in Moscow, Russia  :D

Tina mentioned a timelapspe too, but the only camera that can do a TL is her new one, and I didn't want to wear it out on that.

I just posted this over on the "How's the weather" thread, but might as well copy and paste it here too:

===============================
I just got finished uploading a few random pics of things that caught my eye this morning, and my breakfast.   :thumb:
The weatherman this morning said that in his 20 years reporting on the weather, this was the first time he predicted a high that's in the negatives.
Of course every channel varies by a degree or two, and Intellicast shows a high of zero on the graph and a high of "one" on the ten day forecast.
Not that I'm being picky.
They're calling for more than a foot, with localized "thundersnow" and 15 inches in those areas.

I got lazy and thought I'd find an easier way to rid my driveway of the snow.
Unfortunately, it's not worth the amount of fuel required.

Tomorrow would have been the kids first day back at school after Christmas vacation, but it looks like they'll have not only tomorrow and Tuesday off, but due to more snow coming Wednesday and Thursday, they'll probably have the rest of the week off.
Out here in the rural areas, one snowfall can keep the schools closed for three or four days due to the large amount of unincorporated areas where winding country roads are shaded by trees and the snow never melts away. It just melts, refreezes and keeps the roads pure sheets of ice day after day.

It's amazing the crap we'll try in order to keep from working  ...oh and believe me, I'm guilty of trying some pretty dumb stuff too.

Tasty looking breakfast. We had biscuits, gravy, eggs and bacon...after which I immediately fell into a food coma.

Liam has coined a new word for the blizzard, calling it a snowrnado.

Yea Scott, the propane heater idea was a dud. I sure thought it was going to work, I mean it's fire versus snow, why wouldn't it work?  :duh:
The wife and son are out there shoveling the snow, and I'm hiding in the toasty workshop building some hanging closet hook rack thingies for the wife.

Yes, nice two storms. I am about 30 miles west of Chicago. This might look impressive but back in the late 70s made this look small or the storm of 2011,

Here's a few more photos, just for the fun of it.
As it turns out, the propane heater works much better after your wife and son shovel the driveway. haha
As I melt the snow, I'm scooting the "tent" forward and laying down a nice thick layer of salt.

But there's also a couple neat pics I thought were worthy....

That's a good healthy snowfall for anywhere I would say.  There in the heart of BBQ it is even more impressive!

Up here around Toronto, we have about that much from a storm last week, but nothing like the cold the mid west is getting in the US this week.

It will fall to around -22F with the wind tonight into tomorrow, but without the wind it is 5F so not that bad.

You all have great excuses to now stay home and spin vinyl all day. Stay warm and safe.

15 inches of snow, 15 mph winds creating 30 inch drifts, and tonight's wind chill is pegged at -30F here in southern Michigan.

Fortunately we have power (unless the ice storm from 2 weeks ago) and food, AND the predicted low for this Friday is 30F.

Boy it's been rough this winter.
