Bon Jovi?????
« on: 4 Jan 2014, 09:37 pm »
So my roommate is a total Bon Jovi freak, she never misses a concert, screams like a little girl at them, is watching a DVD concert right now.  She tells me Bon Jovi had the highest grossing tour of 2013.  Now before the playoff game I try to be attentive and listen politely, but I really can't take anymore of the mediocre performance, off key singing, and vapid songs.  I'm watching the game in another room.  Am I off base, is there love for Jon and his music around here?

I'm from NJ and no love here.

My wife digs him but not a fanatic. Went to see them at Metlife Stadium opening show cause I got half price seats and doing the wife a solid since I pick all the shows. Boring... Stadium lounge was nice.

I do like Richie Sambora though.

My wife likes him a lot too.  I see a trend here.

I enjoyed a bit of him in college as girls dug him.  Now, not so much.
Glad to hear he is still filling stadiums.  What, is he about 55 now?

" The Eighties almost killed me. Let's not remember them quite so fondly..."

From  A Positive Jam by The Hold Steady

Not my action. Never was. In the Eighties I played in a band with a singer who's mission in life was to front a Bon Jovi tribute band. He went on to eventually live the dream. He also sang flat so that added a level of authenticity which the true connoisseur could readily appreciate.

But that's just my opinion...and I could be wrong.

There were so many artists that I couldn't listen to but now I can.
Bon Jovi's just not one of them. But maybe I'm half way there ??

My wife also loves Bon Jovi.  For me, I skip over them.  But I also skip over The Beatles (and any individual Beatle), any Led Zeppelin song, etc., so perhaps I cannot be trusted.

You think you got it bad? My wife responds the same to Def Leopard.

30 years later im still mysified at this no talent hack.  And for the record i grew up in new jersey and i was irritated at him before 1990. True story: a few years ago we got a free weekend at foxwoods, with free tix to the head liner "bon jersey." Wife loved it, the free weekend was not even close enough to make for the hour and half of hell before i walked out.

There is a lot of subjective aspects of music and audiophilia (and taste in general) but you cant argue with a straight face that this guy does not just flat out suck.

i would like to take this thread opportunity to ask if anyone else was offended by bruce sharing the stage with this dude at the katrina concert. I understand its charity and all and i understand the nj thing but come on now....

I'm willing to cut Jon some slack because he does a lot of good with his money. Doesn't excuse the crappy music but at least nobody got hurt at MSG that nite. If Bruce can put up with him for 3 minutes who am I to judge, although I would have rather seen Kanye and Bruce duet.

I'd stop short of calling Jon Bon Jovi a no-talent hack. You don't make it as far as he has for as long as he has without some talent. It's just the blandness and mediocrity of it all that leaves me cold. It was always calculated-sounding but he pulled it off so more power to him, I guess. He sure as Hell isn't the only one running around now flogging what John Lydon referred to as "old famous" but he's so obviously doing whatever he figures he has to just to stay afloat - the "country" album being perhaps the most egregious example... ick! Mind you, he never sounded genuine playing pop-metal in the Eighties, either. And at this stage, he should really stop trying to sing the high parts of Livin' On A Prayer live or just step away from the mike and let the fans sing it flat instead of him 'cuz it's just nasty-sounding.

I guess what it boils down to for me is like Frank Zappa said, the product that Bon Jovi produces is there to be consumed by those who choose to consume it. I choose not to but I am by no means taste-maker for the nations...

Offended by The Boss sharing the stage with Bon Jovi at a benefit concert ? Not as much as I would've been a while back - I don't see as much daylight between those two as I once did. Again, just my opinion as a guy who keeps buying Springsteen's latest album and then wondering why. Looks like the new one is gonna be outakes and such. Hmmm....

That sums it up for me too.
Honestly, I'm not even sure why I clicked on a thread about Bon Jovi.
I hope I don't come to regret my inbox being filled with replies to this thread, but I doubt it'll get much more attention. Really.

Yes, and by that line of reasoning, you could also say that McDonalds couldn't have made it this far without producing a quality product.
I dare you to argue that.

I'm happy to say that I've never heard a Bon Jovi song and plan on keeping it that way.
Isn't he one of the bunch that followed the corporate rock crowd that came about when Clear Channel Communications took over all of the radio stations?  That's around the time I gave up on waiting for the next Beatles to hit the scene.

It's not about offering a quality product, just a product. And if there's a market for that product ( either already in existence or created by marketing ), then you move said product for as long as the market for it continues to exist. Same rules apply to Big Macs, Bon Jovi's, or whatever product you're trying to shift. It doesn't necessarily have to be a good product, it just has to fill a requirement. For the more discerning consumer, quality may hold more sway but there's still a market for the lower-quality stuff. Often it's a bigger market.

I'm not defending mediocrity or blandness. It's just another choice in a marketplace full of choices, good and bad. It's not my choice, but I'm not the only schmuck pushing a shopping cart around, either. If somebody else wants to throw a pack or two of Bon Jovi Processed Cheese into their cart, not my lookout. If they invite me over, I'll try to slip it to the dog under the table if it ends up on my plate.  :green:

It is often stated that people eat corporate food regularly not because inherent high quality, but because they know what to expect. It's a predictable experience, no matter its mediocrity. Untold numbers consume musical products for similar reasons I suppose.
