There was a person there, who put forth the proposition, that you could petition the Lord with prayer,

Petition the lord with prayer,

Petition the Lord with prayer.

The Doors--"Soft Parade" on the LP of the same name originally.  I heard it mostly on the 2 LP set "Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine"  (one of several greatest hits collections).

Do I WIN something???

Petition the Lord With Prayer
"Absolutely Live"
Doors

Talk about wierd...I just played that cd less than 2 hours ago for my 17 yr old brother.  He saw the cd on my floor and asked

"Who is this?"

Guess I am getting old...

Best I could come up with on a Sunday

Looks like we have mucho Baby Boomers here.

OK here are a couple more:

"And I asked this God a question and by way of firm reply
He said - I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays"

and:

"Well you can excommunicate me on my way to Sunday school
and have all the Bishops harmonise these lines"

And here's a real easy one:

"If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on, believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would livin' do me"

And if you can handle one more I just thought of (I mean this one is powerful.  After you guess, "do" do a google and read all the words)

If anyone wants to hear the "core" of this artist and the ultimate expression of his sensitive nature, this song is it.  It explains a lot of what was going on in his head at the time. (I'm sure most of you already know it, but the "WHO" is the Zimmerman he refers to?

"God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I'll say it again
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain "

Not to hi-jack the thread, but which member here said:

"Fuck the poor."

No fair doing a search!

If you get it right, you then have to list one of your favorite quotes for us to identify as to who said it.

Since John started this "theme" it made me think of these lines--

"The Christians and the Jews were having a jamboree
The Buddhists and the Hindus joined on satellite TV
They picked their four greatest priests
And they began to speak
They said "Lord the plague is on the world
Lord no man is free
The temples that we built to you
Have tumbled into the sea
Lord, if you won't take care of us
Won't you please please let us be?"

And the Lord said
And the Lord said

"I burn down your cities--how blind you must be
I take from you your children and you say how blessed are we
You must all be crazy to put your faith in me"

The artist mentions the title of the song in its refrain, so I intentionally left those lines out to make it more difficult; the artist also has a rather inimitable style of delivery, so only reading the lyrics would seem to make it somewhat difficult to identify???

Until this thread, I never realized that U2/Bono's "God Part II" was a sequel to the song above, specifically to the "Don't believe in Zimmerman et al" section later in the song:
Lyrics for: God Part II

...Don't believe in cocaine I got a speedball in my head
I could cut and crack you open...did you hear what I said?
Don't believe them when they tell me there ain't no cure
The rich stay healthy the sick stay poor
I...I believe in love

I don't believe in Goldman his type like a curse
Instant karma's gonna get him if I don't get him first
I don't believe that Rock 'N Roll can really change the world
As it spins in revolution spirals and turns
I...I believe in love.....
